Mike Hill and the Future

The part about equal incentives is true. He gets $10,000 per championship, regardless of whether it is women’s tennis or football.

Another reason why we won’t cut sports. Win some obscure conference title, the AD gets paid. The incentive system is absurd.

What a joke!

And still folks refuse to use their brain and ask the question why. Just another random accident just like Hill only hiring shitty coaches in revenue sports. Not intentional at all. Right. Right? Right!?!! :man_shrugging:

If Hill is getting the same bonus regardless of sport, he needs a new agent/lawyer etc.

Not sure if the following 247 piece is up to date on details, but UNC-CH AD Bubba Cunningham’s incentives are much more nuanced:

I’d wager it’s easier to win four Olympic sports championships than one in basketball or football. When you aren’t trying in the big two but want to guarantee some extra walk around money, this is the perfect situation.

Every other AD in the league is focused on MBB/FB. Makes it easy for Hill to scoop multiple bonuses for things no one ever thinks about.

It absolutely disgusts me to think that there literally THOUSANDS of students financing over $1k a year, many of whom will take years or decades to pay them off with interest, so Mike Hill can collect five figure bonuses for the other sports. It’s a miscarriage of justice to our students.

And don’t give me the “where the money comes from” crap, the students finance the whole damn operation for all intents and purposes.

There are definitely good arguments for reducing and even eliminating student athletic fees - especially for those enrolled at a school as reliant on such funds like JMU - but I’m still trying to wrap my head around Hill’s contract not differentiating between sports as concerns bonuses. Not to mention more general things like academic retention, graduation rates, fundraising, facilities, Learfield Cup standing, etc. Hmm…

If we aren’t going to make a real effort and hire real coaches in the big two we don’t need a $40MM budget and we don’t need to pay our AD more than $150k a year. Drop the student fees if we are going to continue to be so unserious.

Sounds like Title 9 for AD bonuses.

This is ridiculous.

Didn’t we win like five track “conference titles” last year? Winning multiple conference titles in track isn’t the equivalent in my mind to winning a conference title in volleyball, softball, or women’s soccer. The Olympic sports aren’t very important to me but winning a title in a ball sport is more prestigious than winning an indoor track relay race.

As said on here before student fees should not be paying Mike Hill bonuses. Mike Hill should be busting his ass to raise money in the community. If he is crushing it in fundraising and the revenue sports are raking in more money through winning game then pay him extra bonuses.

It would be a team track title not an individual/relay winning a championship in a single race.

To me, coaches should get incentives for how their teams perform.

The AD should get incentives for things like growing the 49er club, growing the donor base, hitting sponsorship sales goals, hitting season ticket sales goals.

Mike has objectively not performed well in those areas.

Five 2023-24 AAC champions:

• Men’s soccer
• Women’s indoor T&F
• Men’s tennis
• Softball
• Women’s outdoor T&F

I stand corrected, now I have more ammunition to brag to my friends and co-workers. Just slyly avoid talking about football.

Looks like we are stuck with Hill. With his new deal, he has no pressure. Year 3 of biff incoming. Gaber drew the line and confirmed she doesn’t care. We just gave up 400+ yards on the ground.

Gaber has bigger concerns I’m sure.

She made her decision on hill and now she’s moved on to other priorities I would think.

Unless some scandal comes up I’m sure hill is safe.

He just needs to bring that expansion in on time and on budget and he can stay off her radar I’m guessing.

If and when Poggi leaves we can only hope he will make a better hire. Until then it is what it is.

Been thinking about what jobs Hill would consider attractive enough to leave the QC. Figured Florida would be one, especially with a major Gator departmental housecleaning looking likely once a new UF prez is hired.

Of course, not sure what the likelihood is UF would consider a G5 candidate at all - even one with Gator ties - and particularly one whose record is spotty as concerns revenue sports.

There isn’t a P5 in the country that would touch Hill with his record in football and basketball. He doesn’t even need to be on a contact. We do the dumbest shit here.
