FWIW, the Inside Higher Ed survey was taken by enrolled students, so the decision about selecting a college had already been made. And athletics was in the top half of the factor choices, being 12 out of 26. Of course sports was more important to some - especially athletes - while not so much - as well as not at all - to others. And like Hootie, my children were the same in their view of sports - one cared and the other not at all at their respective schools - both D-I institutions within the UNC System.
I chose Charlotte because we had FBS football. I’m sure I’m not the only one
bump
Our basketball output is a result of the inability of athletics to fundraise and the collective that was handpicked by Mike. He has to go.
You mean silent Mike Hill? We normally hear nothing unless he is firing and hiring. At this point, we look more like CPCC North than a football or basketball school. When will enough be enough?
Fundraising has been shit but north texas has way less nil and still consistently wins
Speaking of the Mean Green. Picked a bad time to start losing. Dropped from #45 to #60 in the NET.
I would love a team that is 60 in NET…
How about the Fowler article? Never thought I would compliment Fowler for such great article, which rightly praises Lutz and rightly calls out the disaster Mike Hill.
“We lost three top players from last season’s team,” Hill said, “for probably over (a million dollars) total. They’re all starting for Power Four teams.”
Gee wis Mike Hill, where could we have found $1 million? Perhaps all the coaches Mike hill paid not to coach? Perhaps Mike Hill’s compensation.
This Athletic Department, hell the entire University is filled with wasteful spending and excuses. We don’t need one person on a ladder holding tight to a lightbulb, while 4 higher compensated employees hold and turn the ladder, but we do, in effect.
Glad Bobby was able to watch a win. I bet he was disgusted still, like most of us, on just how far and just how close to the hottest pits of hell our basketball program has fallen. To wit, celebrating barely, oh so barely beating RICE

Damn right! Our AD and his department are ripe for picking apart and redistributing those wasted funds towards athletes and coaches that could help us succeed more than the sum of those cut loose. Since when has any such cuts been made?
My family ran whiskey with the likes of Junior Johnson. I could buy a rusty discarded ambulance, put a shot coat of primer on it, slap a #3 on the side, drop an engine and tranny in, pick you tranny, load the back with liquor, and challenge any ambulance driver to race. It would be a waste of money, but hey, if you got it to waste, I give you accolades.
That’s problem with Mike Hill, he is begging, borrowing and making excuses today, for his money and opportunities already wasted. Mike Hill took a dying program, and beat it to an unconscionable and unrecognizable state. And so many of you are ok with that
You do understand that’s not how this works right? We aren’t taking general funds from the AD funded by student fees and donors to pay players nor should we. That needs to be money given exclusively to pay athletes from Those willing to fund it and tv revenue. No to mention until now it was even allowed. There is no version of this that taking money from students to not only give players a lot of free shit but to also outright pay them is ok in my book. It’s immoral and unethical IMO. I want no part of that. If it means we never win again so be it.
Not sure i understand the points our AD was trying to make in the article.
Is $1m a lot of money? Was that his point? Do we only have like $50k to spend, if so he should say that.
Is being lower middle tier in the conference with money mean we can’t compete? So are the schools with the
most money in our conference doing all the winning, is that what he meant?
Is he saying we will never be able to compete in bball here again? Was that what he was telling people in that article in the local paper?
Seems to me he was trying to send the message that he cant Win here like Lutz did in his day, interesting messages to send on the day to celebrate Lutz success!
Who is Fowler???
Scott Fowler perhaps?
Oh isn’t he or was he a writer for the Observer???
Could not care less.
Yes, Scott Fowler did a piece on Lutz.
Hill is not allowed ro win here. For now, no one is.Just like we are not allowed to have a med school, etc.
How exactly does one not allow you to win? Did they veto certain hires, and we ended up with major or price?
Bingo! Mike Hill is nothing more than tired excuses for his plethora of failures. God all mighty, how bad must Mike Hill be for us to to miss the “glory days” of Judy Rose? You guys defending Mike Hill, I am as ashamed of you as Niners as I am of our 49ers athletic program. Propping up failures have zapped any momentum to the point we are in a soul sucking negative momentum. Charlotte the city has grown in size and wealth, but Charlotte 49ers athletic program has not come anywhere close to profiting from it. Yahoo, it’s still better than Gastonia or Gaston College. Yahoo Mike Hill
Dude. Just stop. The conspiracy theory is getting old. I would think you’re trolling but at this point I think you really believe it.
I think he’s trolling
Yeah probably. He keeps getting a rise out of people.
The same old blowhards are beating the drum I see. Hill did the right thing by thawing out the relationship with Lutz that led to the honor this weekend. Good for Lutz and the program to recognize his success, but the state of college sports & our basketball program is just sad. Last year was the first time I really enjoyed coming to games and that ECU game felt like the glory days but the realities of NIL that we need a TON of money to compete. Fearne might recruit a great team, win 20 games and then lose 2-3 players for big money and that’s just frustrating, but also reality.
Hill has to be on a short leash though. Football & Basketball coaching decisions + fund raising issues will ultimately be his downfall if things do not improve.
