I think the challenge there is those schools are likely not charging the amount of student fees we do. If we say sports don’t matter beyond just offering them for a college experience then those fees need to come down.
If we continue to charge high fees to help fund athletics then we should expect a certain level of performance out of them.
It seems to me we are going to need to stay the course for a while, figure out how the G6 shakes out.
Will it remain a status quo or will there be a split?
We are going to want to keep our powder dry and options open so we have the ability to make the best decision for us/grab the best opportunity for us that’s available.
I don’t think the status quo is sustainable though.
Not long term.
Something needs to change.
Both for competitive reasons and because of the fees issue.
My gut says long term keeping costs down is going to be a priority.
Does that mean we need to not expand the stadium?
No.
We need to expand because the most important parts of it are things that will make the overall investment pay off better for us as well as a bit more capacity.
But I bet we never expand beyond that.
The greedy power brokers of the P2 and P2AA have the big money on lock and they are working to grab it all and keep it all.
Ive been saying that as well. I think we get the deck on the visitors side built and push capacity to 25-30 and then never get bigger.
We need to get to playing peer schools in terms of financial resources and commitment and under a system we can operate in. The dream of competing on the national stage in basketball or football is mostly dead.
If we had started football in the 90s this would be different convo I feel.
They are playing in leagues where they all have smaller budgets.
It used to be we could recruit some players develop them and be a threat. Continuity of players is how mid majors made noise. Building a program to compete above your position. Now talent is going to leave. So can we make the tournament? Sure if we have resources close to what our conference mates have, but then you have to have money to retain or buy new talent.
In football yes that CFP spot is open but its 1 spot for 6 leagues. So technically can we? Sure. Do I hold onto that? Nope.
The economic climate we are in now is just not one I think we can win in.
If it happens I will enjoy it for sure, just have reset my expectations and emotional investment big time.
I mean, we just entered the conference so our conference payout will be lower. I doubt our budget stays like this long term. We are recruiting above most of our AAC peers, so no rrason we can’t win
I love soccer, but revenue sports are at least 80-90% of the measure of success of an athletic department. They drive everything else. If they aren’t that big of a priority here, that’s a problem.
Mike’s other job is to connect with the community and bring in private and corporate money to fund our programs and capital expenditures. If he isn’t doing so, it’s a problem.
As many have pointed out, it isn’t that we aren’t competing with Bama, Georgia, CHeat or NCSU, it’s that we are not competing with our peers.
Our failure to do so has me drifting further and further away from the program every year.
I do like Mikes plan to move the conference payout money to paying players as you can make the argument that money comes in because of those players. It does put more pressure on fundraising though to make up the money that is no longer going to the operating budget.
If Hills bonuses all carry the same weight regardless of the sport and his contract was extended for failures in football and basketball isnt there a problem with the structure and priorities within our athletic department and doesnt that fall on Gaber?
