Mike Hill’s Performance Review

I wouldn’t have called what we served as edible

Back to the thread at hand. Playing the blame game and looking at the rear view is pointless as hell.

That said, the Albin hire needs to work out. I’m personally optimistic.

It is still amazing that we did not hire someone for the AD office that had football experience instead of the same people making the decisions. I was told we made a trip to ODU and they told us that football is a different animal from basketball and we needed to be prepared.

Yup and we basically took their football playbook and used it including tailgate policies - literally copy and pasted.

Judy should have hired someone with specific football knowledge.

The problem with Lambert was his choice of offensive coordinator and rigidly sticking with him. He wouldn’t have made it in FCS with that offense. Lambert was really was good at identifying and developing defensive guys. Will only had the bowl season because of Lambert’s core team. Lambert was the best head coach we have had to date. Compared to Will and Biff, Lambert was a solid hire for starting the program.

If we had stayed at The FCS level that offense would have cooked.

If Phil hadn’t have died we may have been better positioned talent wise.

Brad was a great guy, just not what we needed given the path we ended up on with the leadership we had.

That bubble screen offense was the most ineffective system I have ever watched. A hurry up offense that couldn’t make first downs paired with a defense that didn’t have any depth. Losing their main recruiter and team motivator was horrible. Hiring and keeping an incompetent offensive coordinator is the reason Brad is no longer a head coach.

How about him not allowing players to call for a fair catch?

The fair catch shit was ridiculous.

I am pretty sure we were top 10 in total offense in 2014 or something like that. The constant hurry up though was stupid.

The defense on the other hand was ludicrous. Playing 10-15 yards off receivers every down no matter the yardage needed was insane.

3rd and 6 with our DBs playing 15 yards deep because we were so terrified of being beaten over the top almost killed me from pure frustration.

Wasn’t Pat Kelsey making like $250k at Winthrop before his extension in 2021? That was a very smart extension. Winthrop got paid when Charleston bought out the contract. Then Charleston smartly extended him with a big buyout contract. Then Louisville threw the kind of big money at Kelsey we cannot. If all these teams recognized Kelsey, why couldn’t Hill make a deal? Just one example

We could have an AD that gets our university paid for smart coaching hires. Instead, it pays the inverse price for bad coaching hires

A lot of folks here - me included wanted Kelsey when we hired Major.

And my point was for a coach to take a job they probably are going to be looking for a competitive wage for the league they are going to be in. Not just a step up from what they are making but a wage comparable to their peers in their new league.

If some company wants to hire me - doubles my current money but I know I they are paying me half of what the people in similar roles are making, well im probably going to decline and look for a company that can pay me what the market says.

We were after Kelsey before his " crash out".

His interview was a disaster because it went against the Niner way of confidence in your abilities.

If a shitty company offers you more money, would you take it? What about a great company that offered you less money, but an experience that should lead to more future money? Good day mate

Have you seen people today? You take the money. Good companies don’t intentionally pay you well below market to take advantage of you with promises of rewarding you later - which rarely pan out.

Sure there is a time to maybe take less professionally usually early in your career or when decide to take 5% less because of a company or a leader but to expect someone to take 20-50% less? Come on. Only dummies do that.

The reality is why would you come here at significantly less compensation (a slap in the face) than your conference peers when you can take a lower league job make about the same win easier and still move up. Thats a better deal than coming here making under market likely losing because we don’t have the resources of other conference peers then getting fired or resigning.

And you analogy we are a great company. Do you think we are a great company?

If anything we need to pay above market to get the talent in we need to get going in the right direction.

They’re almost all shitty.

Today’s nice place to work is tomorrows crap house.

In reality it’s same crap different pay.

Take the higher pay.

Bumping this thread back to the top. Just seems odd that it is buried deep in the subjects. Now, all is right with the world again and spinning properly on it’s axis

Hopefully it translates to wins, very early to run victory laps for an AD who has done nothing but lose. I am much more hopeful today than I was 24 hours ago though
