This is based on a well received book, so my hopes are high. Getting A list actors for it certainly doesnât hurt.
So many movies of his that I love. But I legit teared up the first time I saw that. Magic.
I seem to remember The Natural running in the background in the Observer Sports department on at least a few nights I worked. Those guys were just as sappy as I am.
Thatâs a great list but it doesnât have Spy Game on it, which is one of my favorites.

This is ridiculously hard. Trying to decide between what I think are the best movies vs my favorites.
I think #1 is Raiders, then Heat⌠Gets really really tough after that. I might say Leon / The Professional next, but man that leaves some great flicks out.
Iâll never forget the day after 9-11 I was still in shock and needed to take a break from the news. I started flipping through TV channels and one of them had The Natural playing. I donât know why but itâs exactly what I needed to see at that moment in time. Itâs such as great movie.
So I finally watched James Gunnâs Superman (2025) tonight.
It disappointed me so much that I had to watch Man of Steel to remove the bad taste left in my mouth.
Man of Steel is easily 10x the movie James Gunn wishes he had made. The new one is a video game with no themes, no arcs, nothing. Itâs all shallow glitz and cheap jokes. There is no weight to any of it. Zero consequences. Itâs junk food at best.
Man of Steel is epic. The visuals, the score, and the story are on an entirely different scale. It has meaningful themes and a heroâs arc that is yes, challenging, but ultimately so much more satisfying.
I really dislike what has become of cinema these days. These two movies present an excellent case of just how far it has fallen. Especially since they were both made for mass consumption. What these movies are telling us is that these days Hollywood thinks we are all basically idiots with the comprehension and attention span of toddlers. That wasnât always the case. I miss those days.
Oh, and the #s donât lie either. It looks like most people agreed:
PS - Man of Steel is a brilliant movie. It has aged like fine wine.
Operation Dinner Out is my wife and my code word for date night. Sheâll line up a sitter for the kid and text me that Operation Dinner Out is a go.
