I used to work at Auto Bell, and while cleaning a man's car and making small talk I told him I was in college. He asked where I went to school and I told him UNC Charlotte. He said, "Oh, the Tarheels?" I said, "No, like UNCC... just up the road... University of North Carolina at Charlotte." The whole time he looked at me with a baffled look. I asked him where he was from and he said Charlotte. I asked if he had never heard of us and he said no. Man was I steamed.
i was in atlanta on business and stopped by a bar. the bar was heavily populated with georgia grads. the bartender told me the ga tech grads hung out at the bar across the street. he asked where i went. i told him uncc and he suggested a bar where uncc grads hung out. he confused uncc with unc. the bar had numerous tarhole bumper stickers in the parking lot and i realized he had confused the 2 schools.
My girlfriend's grandmother is getting up there in years and, no matter how many times we tell her, we just cannot convince her that we both go to UNCC because she can't process it. She still thinks we're Tarheels I believe and it's NOT cool.
I have a friend who lives in California and I was asking her where she wanted to go to college, and, during the discussion, I jokingly suggested she go here knowing she can't simply pack up and move to North Carolina, and she said "What? No, I'm not talking about community colleges."
My OWN FAMILY (from Atlanta) STILL has problems understanding that UNC Charlotte is not a branch of Chapel Hill.Everytime this past year Chapel Hill lost in football (which was quite frequent), my brother would chastise me about it on the phone or at family events. âHa ha⌠UNC sucks, man. You guys should just give upâŚâ
I keep telling him, âLook, man⌠Charlotte is not a branch of Chapel Hill. Charlotte is just in the University of North Carolina system.â He just looks at me confused. Then, a week later I hear it all over again. He thinks somehow we should suffer just by associationâŚ
My mom thinks the same way⌠I tried to use the University of Georgia and the University System of Georgia as an example, but I donât think that resulted in any progressâŚ
this guyâs first post EVER, all because of this issueâŚ
First off, I read this board a lot but have not yet posted. However I do agree with the general feelings towards the direction of our program. My name's Tony and I'm a 2006 grad. Anyhow, my own cousin plays on the Cornell women's basketball team and when we joke around about her taking a trip to North Carolina to play my school she still thinks she'd be playing the Tarheels. Her response is always, nah, they'd never schedule us. I'm like Shannon come on I GO TO UNC CHARLOTTE - WE'RE THE 49ERS!!! It's bad enough when your own relatives can't figure out where you went to school...esp when they are in D1 athletics.
TRUE FACT (which I am ashamed of): My dad once referred to us as the dreaded UNCC-Charlotte.
So a friend of mine calls me during the Indiana game, and I mentioned to her that "I'm watching us get drilled by the Indiana Hoosiers." She happened to also be watching the game on her TV. . .A few minutes go by, and she asks me if Iâm not going to a UNCC game tonight (âdonât they play their games on Saturdays?â). At this point Iâm paralyzed, completely dumbfounded. . . Ummmm. . . Iâm WATCHING THE GAME RIGHT NOW, you know. . . She says oh, she was confused because on TV it says âCharlotte.â
:weep:
About two or three years ago, the teenage kid who lives across the street from me said he was flipping through the channels, and he happened to catch a game of ours. This was during our CUSA days, probably on Channel 64.He said he thought it was a pretty good game, and that he didnât realize there was a college basketball team right here in Charlotte. This kid is a Charlotte native, mind you, and in high school at the time. I said to him, âSo it never occurred to you why it is that you live in âThe University Area?â Itâs because there is a university thatâs like, fifty feet from your backyard.â Iâm talking walking distance from campus, literally.
My senior year of high school my family had an exchange student from Brazil for the whole school year. I told him I was going to UNCC and he kept thinking I was going to Chapel Hill. When I corrected him, he said, no the one in Charlotte is UNC isn't it? I think the day he left he finally had it straight... That there is no school in Chapel Hill. And Charlotte is the best university!!! Go Niners!
Both my mom and dad cannot figure out that I graduated from UNC CHARLOTTE...they call it everything under the sun EXCEPT UNCC.....On the flipsideâŚmy grandfather is a big wig at U of Arizona in TucsonâŚhe has no problem understanding the differenceâŚalthough he has only stepped foot inside Halton 1 timeâŚfor my graduation.
I say this to illustrate an important fact regarding our nameâŚthe number 1 missuse of the name seems to come from people WITHIN OUR OWN STATE. What gives?
Every single one of my relatives in South Florida think that I graduated from Chapel Hill. Iâll tell them I graduated from UNC Charlotte, and they say, âOh, Go Tarheels.â I told them that we changed our location, color, and name sometime last year, and that we are no longer the carolina blue tarheels from chapel hill; we are now the Green 49ers from Charlotte. I told them it was time for an upgrade. It was fun to confuse them.
I ran into a friend of mine and was asking her how her kids were doing. She said great and that her oldest just started going to UNC. I said, "was it hard for him to move so far from home?". She replied, "no, the one here." :unhappy:
Two Christmas ago my own Grandma bought me a UNC Tar Heels sweater as a gift. After laughing about it with my family and wondering if she thought I went there or thought I was a fan we went about our Christmas activities. Later that night she calls of course to wish a Merry Christmas and I thank her for her gift. She then asks me "Ohh yea, the sweater of your schools I figured I would get you something to wear around school or to games or whatever."Thanks Grandma.
On 1/20/07 he had gone to Hamâs to watch the GW game, but it turned out they werenât even carrying itâŚ
...when I had first asked the waitress "Are you carrying the Charlotte 49er's game?" ... and she said "who?" ...when I replied "You know, UNCC," she looked me dead in the face (with my 49ers TShirt on) and said "Oh? Are the Tarheels playing today?"âŚmy friends and I promptly made a B-Line for Picassoâs
Okay, I just called Ham's to make sure they were showing the game. The woman who answered the phone first said they were showing it then said "wait, who?" I said "the Charlotte 49ers". Her response - "Who is that". I almost just said "turn around and look at all the green freaking banners behind you" but I didn't, I calmly explained "UNC Charlotte."
Does anyone remember UNC Charlotte has a Credit Card deal w/ MBNA/BofA? I called to check on my acct., & the lady said, "I see you're calling on you're Alumni Association card for UNC."
My new neighbors asked me what I was doing and where I was going - so I told them I went to Charlotte - they then asked me how much I was enjoying UNC... Saddly enough, even after trying to jam an explanation stating we are actually UNCC not UNC i thikn they still think i go to UNC...
today at lunch I was asked if we were a satellite campus? and that the only reason they figured we weren't is b/c we had a different mascot.
I've had a lot of family members from other states confuse us with Chapel Hill. When I correct them and say i'm at Charlotte they get embarassed, which allows me a moment to tell them all of the great things I love about UNCC. Especially how much better it is than Chapel Hill.
While walking back after the rain delay at Game 6 of the 2007 NCAA Tournament Baseball Regional against USC, I heard a Wofford fan call us "North Carolina Charlotte."
When I was in NJ for vacation a few weeks ago, my grandmother was introducing me to her friends and talking about how I just graduated from UNC. I took her aside later and said that its UNC Charlotte or just Charlotte. She replied that there is no difference. The reasoning behind this is because in NJ, Rutgers, which is the state university has five campuses, Newark, Camden, New Brunswick, etc. Whether you go to Camden or New Brunswick you still go for the Scarlet Knights and receive a diploma from Rutgers, the State University of NJ. She, along with most of my family believe that I go to a satellite school of UNC, therefore I got my diploma from UNC. THe only family members who know that I go to UNC Charlotte are the ones that follow sports and know us as Charlotte. It kills me to hear my family so proud of my graduation and that it is from UNC instead of Charlotte.
Went in to interview for a job on Monday. The lady looked at my resume and saw "UNC Charlotte" and went, "Ooooooo UNC, I don't know. I hate those Tarheels."I said, âNo, itâs UNC Charlotte.â
Her reply was, âSame difference, itâs UNC.â
I went on to explain how many of us in Charlotte, including myself, actually despise Chapel Hill. The worst parts are that this girl attended Southern Miss, an old CUSA foe, and has lived in Greensboro for quite some time.
While I was at work bartending tonight I had two incedences, both while watching blue Carolina vs, red Carolina baseball super-regional.First I was cheering on S. Car. when a customer said âyou must be a Gamecock fanâ. I explained that I wasnât and that I was raised to hate the Heels and that it only got worse when I went to Charlotte. He asked âwhoâ so I explained it was UNC Charlotte. He said âwell you should be wanting UNC to win!â. Mind you, I want this very nice but confused man to tip me, so I gently explained it to him and he finally got it.
Same bacis thing happened with a really nice woman 45 minutes latter. I explained again using the line âWe have as much connection with UNC-Ch as do NCSU and ECUâ.
This happens to me all the time. The worst thing is that both these customers told me they are former residents of the Charlotte area! They hardly had a clue about us!
jesus christ, i just got this as a birthday present from my dear mom:
http://darrylbanks.net/graphics/img078.jpgHope she still has the receipt, because this thing will not be staying in my house. Oh, and not only that, she told me a while back how she heard our mascot got killed. . . the years of explaining this over and over have done no good.
It really was an excellent gift idea, though, considering how often I wear 49er gear. Maybe giving this back to her will finally drive the point home.
This happenend a few years ago. When I first told my Canadian cousins about âuncâ Charlotte, they said âthe place where MJ playedâ.My parents called it chapel hill then something else, and then finally just gave up and call it âThe Universityâ
He is from Kentucky and he was telling some of his relatives over there about âUNCCâ and they asked him if we were a community college.
I kinda felt bad correcting an elderly lady the other day⌠she and her grandson were buying some things at my store, and college came up because he is going to be a freshmen at NCSU in their wordworking program (or something of that nature). I told them I went to Charlotte, and she said that he almost decided to do MEGR at UNC⌠I jumped in and corrected her saying that we werent UNC. But it is sad that people who were obviously from the area didnt realize that we arent UNCâŚ
My girlfriendâs parents had some friends in town, and the visiting friend (female) asked me what school I attended, and my major, etc. I told her I went to UNC Charlotte for Marketing and asked if she had ever heard of it.Her reply was that of course she had heard of it, she and her husband flew through Charlotte often in years past and saw âour shirtsâ every where. I was shocked, but I knew something was up. She asked what our team name was and I said, âForty-Ninersâ and she said she didnât remember that.
And then she said, âYour school colors ARE blue and white though, right?â
I had to explain to her the whole UNC-system and that she was thinking of UNC-Chapel Hill and itâs a common misconception.
So Iâm playing on XBOX Live (my gamertag is Charlottedude) and this guy asks if Iâm from Charlotte. I reply yes and he asks where abouts I live. I tell him near the university. He asks what university and I say Charlotte and then he says, âOh, UNCC Charlotte?â I just said yes and exitted the area⌠sigh
my girlfriend recently went to a debutant dance thing with one of her friends with a lot of girls who went to our high school, and she said that when she said she went to UNC Charlotte, a girl asked, âis that a four year school?â she said yesâŚand then she asked âdo they have sports?âive heard âdo they have sportsâ before, but come onâŚasking if itâs a four year school? No. itâs a 2 year community college that they just threw into the UNC system. So are NC State and App, if youâve heard of themâŚgahâŚtalk about someone whoâs been spoon fed where to go to school their whole life.
Iâve been trying to move into this house near school and had to barrow a screwdriver from one of my neighbors. I was introducing myself and making small talk and he asked, âDo you guys go to UNC?â Of course I wanted to say something more like âUNC? Weâre nowhere close to Chapel Hillâ but I had just met the guy so I just said âyeaâ and let it pass.
Random post, don't know why I didn't post it earlier in this blog. I was cleaning out my room and thought about this, figure I'd share. A couple of years ago (when the Panthers played St. Louis in the NFC divisional playoff '03) I had a green toboggan with UNCC stitched on the front. I had bought this toboggan in the campus bookstore and finally had the opportunity to wear it. So there I was, all decked-out in Panthers' gear and a UNCC toboggan to keep the cold wind away. This man behind me starts talking smack, making fun of me because he thinks I like the Green Bay Packers. I had no idea as to what he was talking about, then I realized he's looking at my toboggan. When I explained that UNCC is a university in Charlotte, he's like "Oh, okay, sorry man." It just pissed me off plus to make matters worse, it was in front of my best friend who went to NC State. So I guess my point in a round-about way is not only do we get confused with Chapel Hill, we also get confused with the Green Bay Packers!!!
I was talking to my landlord and he said that he had had members of the UNC soccer team living in his other house.
This one is personal, and just happened today. I conducted a phone interview for a business I will not name......the recruiter was working out of another state and somehow she brought up the NCAA tourney. She said I noticed you go to UNCC......she then told me how disapointed she was that we beat her old school really badly................................THE ARKANSAS RAZORBACKS. Almost had me stuttering the rest of the interview from that one.
I was in the Final Score store at Concord Mills tonight. I told the store owner that he needed more Niners merchandise. We started talking and after about 30 minutes we got on to the topic of admissions and where in the state most of our students are from. I told him that we get students from all over the state even though a majority probably come from the Charlotte area. He said he thought that was strange because he thought they would go to a branch of the university that was closer to where they lived. I had to explain that all the universities were separate institutions even though we all have UNC at the beginning of our name. I guess it's not really his fault for not knowing any better but it is still frustrating. The university doesn't do enough to educate the community about our school.
I started a new job this week. I was introduced in front of all 140 employees of the company as a graduate of the University of North Carolina, for both my undegrad and master's studies (I went to UNC Greensboro for grad school). I had to try not to cringe as everyone clapped and smiled and welcomed me.
A consulting company contacted me last year wanting to discuss hiring me for some of their long-term contracts. I went to talk to them, and when the recruiter saw my resume, he said "Oh, I see you're a tarhole fan". I politely showed him the "CHARLOTTE" on the resume, and he seemed surprised when he found out we have grad school. He also said he knew nothing about us, athletically or academically. When the interview session was over (and I had already made up my mind), I rode the elevator back down to ground level and stepped out onto the streets of DOWNTOWN CHARLOTTE.
Unbelievable !!!
Yesterday at the women's volleyball game against Howard, we were joking around with their head coach a lot and at one point he came by and was talking with us. We had noticed that his shirt underneath his jacket said "un" but we couldn't make out the rest so while he was talking to us, someone asked what his shirt said besides "un." He opened up his jacket to show us and then asked 'did you think it would say UNC?' or something else where I know he was trying to say the name of our school. Then the person who asked him to show us his shirt said 'Actually we're UNCC' and the coach said 'Oh yea, UNCC' or something like that. Can't remember the exact dialog, but still name confusion.
Today after spreading the good word about the rally around Panther's Stadium, we went to Hooters. Our waitress was pretty annoying. She was either trying to be too nice or work the tip wayyy to hard but she just stood there and kept talking to us. And none of us showed obvious signs of interest and it was really strained conversation. In fact, I believe this entry could also be included in the "How To Not Be A Waitress Log" if anyone has one.Anyway, she was talking about how she went to JCSU and was talking to us about our school after we told her we went to UNC Charlotte, and she said âyea I kinda wish I had gone to UNC.â Later when we were leaving the table she said to me, âYou guys have convinced me I should go to UNC.â No, I never bothered correcting her. I was tired from low sleep and walking around downtown and I really didnât want to talk to that chick anymore. Good luck at Chapel Hill, Hooters girl!
So I was scre.... I mean respectfully dating this girl, and one time I was up at Chapel Hill. She is a LSU fan/grad. We are at Chapel Hill Hams, and she turns to be and says, Dont you feel at home?I laughed, thinking she wa sjoking. She then looked at me puzzled in the way that blondes often do, and says, didnât you graduate from here?
I said no. She asked, I thought you said you were a UNC grad.
I say I am, UNC Charlotte.
She says⌠Isnt it the same thingy?
I had one of Jenn's friends at VT ask me why I wasn't cheering for "UNC" next week. She said, "I thought you went there."I said, âNo, UNC Charlotte.â
She goes, âArenât they all the same?!â
Le, sigh. Jenn set her right though.
Today I went to a car show with one of my friends and his car club. When we went to dinner, the VT vs. UNC game was on. When VT sacked UNC's qb I cheered and one of my friend's club buddies said, "You're not pulling for UNC? Why??" I said, "I hate UNC with a passion." And he said, "But you go to UNC.." Also keep in mind that I heard this guy talk about "UNCC" earlier in the day and I had on a "CHARLOTTE FORTY-NINERS" shirt. This kid isn't slow or anything though he may qualify as what we would call a "Wal-Mart Tarheel Fan" but he is a good guy. People just don't understand.
I was in Chapel Hill for the VT game. When I mentioned to someone that I went to Charlotte, they responded, "Oh, UNC?" I said, no UNC Charlotte. They asked why I was wearing a VT shirt, and if we got tickets to the games when I was in school.Huh?
My coworker (from Charleston SC) was explaining to people in my office about what he heard on Fox News Edge last week when the comments were played. He said that he heard me on there, and was trying to remember what I said. He tried to quote me as saying "Go UNC" (which is totally wrong, I said Go Niners). So obviously this gets my blood boiling, and I VERY sternly said to him, WHAT SCHOOL DID I GO TO? He replies with âDude, they are all the same! Its all one big school!â Needless to say his head almost came off at that point. However I calmly explained to him what common sense is, and he retortsâŚSo you guys are like their Little Brother huh?
Today I told a guy in Winston how excited I was that it looks like Charlotte was going to get football. He asked how many students we had now, and when I replied we had 22,000 and expected to be over 28,000 by 2015, he came back with "Wow, you guys have more students than the main campus, it's about time they let you have football." As I tried to explain the UNC system, he looked at me as if he just didn't believe it. While this guy graduated from the Citadel, he had two daughter recently graduate from NC State and is an avid sports fan. He's lived in NC for over 60 years and thought that every school with UNC was a satellite of Chapel Hill.
So my parents are planning on moving within 6 months or so, and over the last couple years have had a few big yards sales. Last fall, I went home to help out with one. Needless to say, I met all kinds of people, which was cool. So I have on a CHARLOTTE 49ers shirt (as always), and a nice lady that I had been chatting with says "so you go to UNC?" Thinking she is just some clueless member of the general public, it didn't really shock me. "Oh haha no unc CHARLOTTE." I politely say. "Oh uhh well yeah." She says. Right when I think I'm going to let her off the hook for just being another uninformed soul who has never really had any ties to the University (I figured she was from out of state or something), she spit out this info... "Well that's awesome, I'm a fan. My son goes there, and I went there, and was freinds with Cedric Maxwell when I was there."JESUS H CHRIST!!!
THIS LADY HAD A SON IN SCHOOL AT CHARLOTTE!
SHE WENT TO CHARLOTTE!!
SHE WAS GOOD FRIENDS WITH THE STAR OR FOUR FINAL FOUR TEAM!!!
âŚand she STILL refers to us as freakinâ UNC!!!
A couple months ago when my sister had decided to come back to school and better yet decided Charlotte was where she would go, she kept referring to it as UNC no matter how many times I corrected her. Personally, I don't think she has us confused with Chapell Hill. It's actually more likely that she doesn't realize Chapell Hill exists and she was calling the school UNC for short. She doesn't do it anymore, but it was really frustrating for a while. I cut her a break though, because she is a sweet girl and has absolutely no interest in sports which is why she may not know Chapell Hill exists.
I'm decently active on the message boards at collegelax.us, which is where people discuss the happenings in the MCLA, which is what Charlotte's lax team is a member of. I tend to be one of the people to go to if someone needs to contact the team. The following is an exchange I just had via PM.WallyLaxFan wrote:Question:
Who is the president of the UNCC Charlotte Lax team or the person in charge of scheduling games? Could you please give me there e-mail address?Response:
Not to sound like a dick, but itâs UNC Charlotte, not UNCC Charlotte. Name issues are a pet peeve of mine.
In a meeting today, a woman I work with asked if I went to see Obama at 'UNC' last night. She used to live just north of campus in Harrisburg and drove by the front entrance of our campus every day on her way to work for 5+ years.
I just got an email from the ROTC enrollment officer inviting me to sign up for a class in the spring. He referred to UNC Charlotte as UNC-Charlotte 3 times. One of which was in his signature.
Here's two whopper's from someone in admissions...Somebody called and asked, âIsnât this where Michael Jordan played basketball?â
Another time somebody called in and asked for directions to the Admissions office. She was instructed to get there from the front entrance. After much confusion, admissions simply asked what buildings the caller was around. After naming many buildings not on our campus, admissions asked, âExcuse me Ms., but where did you say you were?â
Her response, âIâm on your campus! In Chapel Hill!â
Le, sigh.
I was also told the confusion happens quite often and sometimes people ask to be forwarded to Chapel Hill when they realize thereâs a difference.
While leaving the arena last night and walking to my car, I heard 2 Clemson fans call us UNC.
Talking to my mom about an article in the newspaper about what to do after graduation and she said, "Maybe you should go to this 'UNC Career Center,' referring to the UNC Charlotte University Career Center listed in the article in the paper. I know she means well and knows better, but dagnabit.
People at my work keep referring to Charlotte as "CPCC" or "UNC". It's driving me crazy
