Niners get coverage in SHELBY

This is the first time in recent history that I can remember The Star in Shelby covering the Niners. Lots of ACC folks & coverage there (understandably) but it’s nice to get some 49er talk in there as well. Also in print version.

PS. On their website in the sports drop down box they have “Collegiate sports” and then a separate section for “Gardner-Webb” I promise you, there are way more ACC fans in Shelby than Gardner-Webb fans, but they do a damn fine job of covering their hometown team regardless. I’m just sayin…

Nice find, Sparty. This quote stuck out to me, though…
Plus, his love and passion for the school cannot be questioned. After all, he chose to remain 49ers coach two years ago instead of accepting a more lucrative offer from South Alabama. Certainly, his loyalty was rewarded with a contract extension with Charlotte that runs through the 2012-13 season.
Was it really a better deal at USA?

I don’t remember the details, but it was definitely a long-term deal = more money in the long run.

Well, yeah, it was a six-year deal, but I think the yearly salary would’ve been a cut for him. Not positive, though.
Entering Saturday’s noon game at St. Joseph’s, coach Bobby Lutz’s team is off to the school’s worst start in 23 seasons at 5-10.

Saturday? Guess that better than saying Sunday when the game is actually Saturday. Better to be too early than too late.

This is the type of story that I would expect in the Charlotte Observer in between gameday stories.

Nice story, even if they have us tipping off a day early.

Hint for Mike P. - simple stories like this on non-gamedays would keep many of us from talking crap about your product.

Maybe now, no one will notice when we lose.

Hey now, lets be careful with that attitude.

Each game is a new day that we have a chance to …

ah hell with it, I doubt I can get anyone to actually believe it.

This was in print and online in the Gazette too. I’ll let the writer know about the Sunday tip.

I emailed him about the article. Hopefully the feedback will encourage him to write more about us.

I live in Cleveland County (when I’m not here at school ), and sparty’s right, the Star does give a lot of ACC coverage and while I’ve seen AP articles on the Niners, I’ve never seen anything of this quality, even if it was written by a Gazette writer.

FWIW, Garnder-Webb usually gets a front page spot on the Star’s sports page.

The author, Richard Walker has been supportive of our football movement. He was on packer’s show one time discussing it.

-2 cool points for listening to Packer.

Even when they are discussing 49er football??? I had to make sure they were keeping the facts straight.

Not too often is the word “facts” associated with Mark Packer.

I would rather read the Observer Sports page than listen to Packer.

The Mack Attack and Primetime are stupid shows, regardless of the subject matter.

Yeah, but the DOWN side is you’d have to live in Mobile, Alabama.

Richard Walker is AWESOME. He wrote a few Charlotte Football articles and responds to emails. I’d encourage everyone to write to him and say thanks for the coverage…
Richard Walker is AWESOME
the observer needs to trade mary for richard.

the observer needs to trade mary for richard.

Word.

When football finally happened, Richard said it was something that should have happened YEARS ago, and hopefully it wasn’t too late (in terms of conference realignments, etc…)

The man knows whats going on.

RICHARD WALKER FOR PRESIDENT!!!
