I was first row under one of the baskets. I remember that place was electric and we were doing great right up until a missed dunk on the other basket - then the game turned. Donāt recall if the injury was on that dunk or not.
I knew I wasnāt crazy.
Pretty sure he got hurt when he landed badly trying to block a dunk attempt by a high flyer they had.
Weird I cannot find that game in the records. An exhibition??
regular season game. ETSU was ranked, game was on ESPN - they wanted it in the old Mine Shaft for the feel. 2/16/91.
edit: look what I found: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CiDaM-d5mBI
Donāt think this was the game he got hurt though.
The ETSU game was the previous season. I was there for that one too. Sitting about 4 rows deep under one of the baskets. As Iāve said before, I remember ESPN bringing in a bunch of lights because Belk was so dark. Even then there is no light really beyond the court itself.
Jarvis got hurt in one of the two opening games of that following season. I thought it was on a dunk but it may have been a block now that I think of it. And at the time, I didnāt know the difference between College of Charleston and Coastal Carolina. So it was never clear who the opponent was to me. It was just some school ādown near the beachā.
If Jarvis stays healthy that team could have rivaled the final 4 team.
Agreed. Thatās the year that introduced me to the 10 Commandments of Niner Basketball.
Waa it West Virginia we beat at Winthrop Coliseum where Jarvis went off and refused to let us lose?
Thing I loved about Jarvis was his evolution.
His Freshman year he was a literal rebounding machine and a dunk machineā¦just vicious with both.
By the time he was a Senior he developed a nice jumpshot and had 3 point range.
But if he made up his mind to get a reboundā¦he got it.
If he made up his mind to dunkā¦he dunked.
He was a machine.
Had his poster on my wall as a junior and senior. Played volleyball frequently with his girlfriend on the front field and he was always cool. Jarvis was a beast on the court and pretty cool off it too.
When he came to a tailgate a few years back it was awesome. I am going to make a point to get some former basketball guys out. Maybe Jarvis again, Diego, Jobey - I will see what I can do.

Why did we play at Winthrop? Tournament?
WVA coach refused to play us in Charlotte.
Yep, total BS by then WVU coach Gale Catlett. Was an assistant under Lefty Driesell at Davidson in the mid 1960s.
The announcer for ESPN for ETSU game was the guy who drowned in his pool later on. Can not think of his name.
Tom Mees
OMG no way that happens today without a big suspension.
Things were cooler back then in some ways.
If you are going to square up in that bunch do not chose the brotha from Lovetron Mr. Chocalate Thunder himself Daryl Dawkins!!!
One of my all time favorite athlete personalities when I was a kid.
