FIU’s Butch Davis did not leave UNC-CH due to the academic scandal. He left due to an improper benefits scandal that involved assistant coach John Blake. Blake connected several Tar Heels with runners and agents who gave them money and other improper benefits. UNC-CH vacated several wins, including a bowl victory and some players were declared permanently ineligible.
The academic scandal was discovered after the improper benefits investigation was underway, but Davis was gone before everyone focused on academics.
