NNN Investment...

We have a new server being built for NNN. I just invested $268.90 for initial setup, upgrades, and first month’s lease. For you geeks out there:

Intel i7 Quad processor with hyperthreading (4 real + 4 virtual CPUs)
8GB of RAM
100 MBPS network link
Plenty of drive space
6000GB of bandwidth a month

Essentially it blows the doors off our current celeron machine. It should be ready for me to begin loading sometime Monday. We’ll have some down time one night once i have the server. Probably be down for the better part of a few hours, but it really depends on how fast the IP change takes and will be different for every one.

As far as donations to the site, you can feel free to hold off for now. I’ll be setting up an official campaign with goals, disclosure of operating costs, budget, and recognition for those that donate should they want it. That will be put in place once on the new server and I’ve done some software upgrades.

This new server should allow for lots of growth and stability. Monthly costs will go up to $85 a month essentially, although there are incidentals from time to time like domain registration.

If you can, I would suggest changing the TTL of the DNS entry to 5 minutes so when you change the IP it is very quick for everyone.

I’d be happy to chip in a few bucks once you have that system in place. Thanks for all that you do!

Hopefully I get this new job and can donate more than I have in the past. Also, does this mean the shoutbox will be back?

I use a free DNS provider which gives me little control over TTL. Used to just run Bind myself on the server, but it was just such a PITA that I gave it up for the free solution… Eason, sorry I didn’t take you up on the possible server deal. The deal I grabbed here was just too good to pass up and it’s with my current provider which has been reliable from an up time perspective.

With that hardware, shoutbox will be no problem…

Sounds great, when you get the system in place, I’ll be making a donation as well.

Just out of curiosity, how much bandwidth does the site currently consume per month?

Bandwidth is on average a few gigabytes of data a day. We won’t come near our monthly allotment. We pretty much have unmetered bandwidth at the moment, but it’s on a 10MBPS link. So moving up to 100 will help a little on speed.

One suggestion, if possible, is to give info on alternative means of donation than paypal (or did I miss that before?). Had a poor experience with them and vowed not to use it again.

Awesome… but Shoutbox WILL be back, right?

Damn I feel like a moron with all this geek talk. Thanks for all you do Mac.

Thanks for all you do mac. Looking forward to seeing your cost numbers.

One small suggestion. Just be sure NN.N is not down when we hire a new coach.

It will be at night when we have the down time in any case… as in middle of the night

Don’t forget to include the coffee you drink in your mid-night upgrades as part of your operating expenses.

For the non technical types - our new server is gonna be a Ferrari. It’s overkill for what we’ve done with the site, even with the shoutbox and other features. It will allow for growth and interesting days such as Monday…

but don’t include shmoozing with the big boys over steak and lobster. Will these expenses be audited? paper trailed? receipts?

u know im only kidding!

The growth is the key here guys. As we get closer to adding football I expect site traffic to grow dramatically. Mac has done a great job getting us a great deal. The site will be really set up to motor when he’s done with the upgrades.

FOOTBALL? I’ve been able to do nothing all week as it is now!

Thanks Mac, we’ll make sure the costs are handled.

Yeah this week has killed my productivity at work.

Awesome!
