NORFOLK, Va. (AP) – Old Dominion is resurrecting its football program after nearly 70 years with contributions of nearly $6 million from alumni, students and community leaders.
“Old Dominion University football will be returning to Foreman Field in 2009,” Board of Visitors Rector James Hixon announced at a news conference and tailgate party at the field Wednesday.
The Monarchs will compete in Division I-AA as a member of the Colonial Athletic Association. The school said it also will add three women’s sports – crew, softball and volleyball – to meet Title IX requirements.

This makes me sick! Before long, we’ll be the only major university in the country without football…this is very, very sad.

We need the University to come out and say “show us the money and we will make it happen”, until then no one will take any kind of fund raising seriously.

Well, I think we could make it happen sooner if we aspired to do D1-AA for a long time, but I thought the administration said D1-A or nothing, so abviously its going to take longer.

The board agreed to the possibility, provided three criteria were met: a consultant's report indicating community support for a program, the acquisition of land to meet practice and other athletic needs, and pledges of at least $8 million for a football endowment. The first criterion was met in December when consultant PricewaterhouseCoopers released a market assessment report indicating a wide and strong base of support for football, particularly among alumni.

The report also indicated that the university would undoubtedly meet its financial goals, and development officials have already raised more than $5 million prior to the start of an official campaign. Projected donations in the amount of $1.5 million a year, student fees, ticket sales and concessions will also help sustain the new program.

In April, an agreement was announced between the university and the city providing land to ODU for two football practice fields and additional women’s sports teams.
According to Jarrett, the university will hire an assistant athletic director for football this fall and a head coach during the 2007-08 school year. Also, six full-time and one part-time assistant coaches will be hired. The first group of recruits, mostly freshmen and junior college students, will enter the university in fall 2008. Jarrett also noted that as many as 33 support people in ticketing, marketing, athletic training and other areas will be added over the next three years.

Where the hell are those 41 new people going to work? Does ODU just have a spare building laying around?

School #1 is ODU, school #2 is UNCC. ODU shares a less populated state with two strong football schools, much stronger than what we have in this state. Yet they have the wherewithal to start football and we don’t???

That’s very depressing Nova.

I agree. We need someone to spearhead this issue/effort and press forward. Has Judy done anything about it or is she simply happy to be “status quo”?

IF ODU, UNCP and Coastal can get football started, we must be doing something (or not doing something) wrong!

I sent Judy and Dubois a long email with my thoughts and didn’t receive a response from either of them… that was over two months ago. :unhappy:

Care to post your email???

I just checked and it is no longer in my sent mail folder. It was just basically saying I think it is time to move forward on this issue… even if the first step is just to officially start a fundraising campaign specifically for football. Even if that goes on for 10 years before we have enough money to do anything with, at least would be moving in the right direction… etc.

It was a long email and I put a lot of time into it… I was at least expecting some generic response. Oh well…

and yes allie, it is yet another large picture

a great read about ODU “building” their program:

ODU will start in 2009.

I don’t think many know who they’ll play yet, but in 2010 they will start the season with Cornell.
