One recruit bails on the Hokies

Virginia Tech signee Augustus Gilchrist is asking to be released from his LOI. DePaul, Miami, Pittsburgh, South Florida had previously offered him a scholarship.

Silly reason to decommit. Those shootings could have occured at any school. That can’t be the only reason he decided to look elsewhere.

He was probably looking to leave anyways, and is using this as an excuse.

Probably the real reason, but let’s break this down using his logic to see where he will wind up.

Pittsburgh is in the same city as Duquesne, where 5 players were shot last year while minding their business on campus.

Miami has had multiple football players involved in shootings, some of their own doing and some not.

DePaul is in urban Chicago. I wouldn’t classify that as “safe”.

Using his logic, I guess he will be attending South Florida. :ponder:

His stock has gone up huge since he signed with Va. Tech. He is taking advantage of the situation, very sad.

I hope every fan on every team he plays against boos the hell out of that a55hole.

Regardless of the “real” reason, how can anyone fault him for not wanting to go there now? It’s true they could happen anywhere, but they didn’t. They happened there.

He’s 18.

I’m sure he realizes that it’s going to be a long string of sad memorials now for his entire four years as they remember all these people. I can’t really blame him for not wanting to be a “part” of that. Obviously that might not be his real motivation. But I can empathize with him if it is.

It was a difficult time after Columbine, and after 9-11 as well. This kid just happens to be getting the hype since he’s a basketball player. I’m sure other “signees” (regular students) chose not to go there as well.

Granted a full release by VT…

Another one gone at VT…

Luckily, we have Bowden on board … now that VT lost this shooting guard.
The ACC doesn’t allow its schools to admit freshman athletes who are nonqualifiers.

Some nonqualifiers can eventually transfer to ACC schools, but Pellum can’t because he had already enrolled at Tech. Pellum can never play for any ACC school.

“If [the NCAA ruling] had happened in the summertime, we could’ve … found a Division I school,” Brower said
La Salle got him to visit their campus and they came close to landing him. I could see him at an A10 school next year (or even next semester).

Maryland lost a big time signee too, wants to talk to UK and LSU.

You’re talking about Terrence Jennings. We were recruiting him a few months ago but I had not heard whether we are back on his radar.

EDIT: lol!

Maryland secured a solid verbal from Jennings, ranked in the top 5 for power fowards, but they say that did not stop coaches from continuing their recruiting. The decision by Jennings and his father to decommit came as a total surpise.

Now take one guess at the head coach who lined up “the one school in addition to Maryland that Jennings says he wants to visit”

Take your time.

Before I look, my guess is Bob Huggins.

Ok Ok, we all know Bob is dirty, and we all know you don’t make friends in business. However this is getting a little silly, a few eyebrows were raised after the whole beasley-dalonte-stabbin bobby in the back thing. But now he is screwing with bigger coaches. God I hope this guy falls hard, and this time I promise no one will stick their neck out for this slimeball ever again.

Gilchrist will still end up in the ACC – just at Maryland instead of VT.
