A team of eight UNC Charlotte students won the first National Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition, hosted April 21-23 by the University of Texas at San Antonio.
The Charlotte team defeated three regional champions and a team jointly fielded by the five U.S. military academies.
The competition is part of the Department of Homeland Security’s effort to promote protection of information infrastructure.
The three-day competition included various scenarios, with scoring based on meeting deadlines, keeping computers running and preventing hacking by a group of veteran technology professionals.
UNC Charlotte’s College of Information Technology has a special focus on information security and privacy issues.
Team members were Anthony Foust, Steven Blanchard, Nathan Conrad, James Deese, Richard Kelly, Dennis Underwood, Andrew Falivene and Zach Wadler.
UNC Charlotte is the fourth-largest of the 16 institutions within the University of North Carolina System. Enrollment, which totals about 20,000, is projected to increase annually through 2010, bringing the university a projected student body of more than 25,000.

Congrats!

Very interesting. Read the Business Journal edition above and then the Observer edition. Notice the difference??

i can’t believe you did not notice. the observer downplayed the competition.

in basketball this would be the same as saying “unc-chapel hill finshed first among four teams” when discussing last year’s final 4.

i don’t think this crap is coincidental myself.

I’m beginning to think you and Over40 are right. As soon as I read the BusJournal piece the first thing I remembered was the Observer story from yesterday. Coincidence?

I agree...
Can you give us a hint?
For the record, you were being sarcastic.

As a student of the college of IT, I’d like to say how proud I am of those guys. Way to kick some ass!

Also, the Observer really really really blows. Im new to this whole contraversy about the big O, but now Im truely beginning to see where all the anger stems from. I also can see now why it is called the big O…

I have known this for years.

People often ask me why, after I tell them that I was accepted to UNCC and Wake, I chose Charlotte. I tell them reasons like this. Charlotte has a much better IT dept. The end. People need to get their heads out of their asses. You go to the school that fits you, and your major, and your needs. I’m tired of people asking my girlfriend why she’s going to Charlotte next semester (to be a teacher). WHY go to UNC CH, Duke, Wake, to get a teaching degree that costs less, means the same at Charlotte? Not to mention she got a full ride scholarship, and loves the city of Charlotte. Which is another reason why I didn’t want to go to WFU (Winston blows, wake has like 3 students). Pull your head out of your ass people. Just because mommy and daddy have a tarheel teddy bear or wake forest has a football team doesn’t mean Charlotte isn’t a good school.
