with the transfer of jerrell lewis we have two more schollies to give. we have given one to bowden so we have the sg position taken care of. who else are we scouting or looking at. i think we need to add a big man to back up phil and either a top 100 guy at any position or a coley clone(big time athlete and defensive stopper) i saw were looking at a couple pgs in darius johnson odom of raleigh and lateef macmullan of gastonia. both two star players so im not that excited. also, even though we have not offered why are we looking at pgs. has anybody else heard any names. there is plenty of talent in nc to choose from. i dont necessarily agree with the idea of replacing jerrell with a transfer guys, unless hes really good.
Shouldn’t this be in the recruiting forum? Sorry to be picky, everyone else does it
my bad. a little tired and wasent paying attention.

Right now most the players that we had on target in 2008 have committed somewhere. If we can get a Big as a transfer then I say DO IT! Especially if he was a 3-4 star out of HS. We can afford to wait a year, and a transfer would come in and make an impact immediately. It’s better getting a transfer from a D-1 school rather than getting a subpar big that will come in as a frosh and might end up transferring anyways.
I was waiting on Captain Obvious to say the below statement but I will do it instead:
The Lutz contract situation is killing us right now in recruiting.

No, it is not.
No, it is not.
I definitely doesn’t help. Any other coach recruiting a kid is going to point to the fact that Lutz only has 1 year remaining on his contract after this season.
No, it is not.
Please explain. How could it not be a factor?
Please explain. How could it not be a factor?
Never said it wasn’t a factor, just don’t think it’s killing us. 2 schollie’s left, we may or may not to fill right now, I think we were only counting on one anyway.
It’s killing you. First words out of the mouth of another team recruiting the same player: “Oh you like the staff at Charlotte? There is no guarantee any of them will be there after next year.” Why on Earth would any decent player risk going through a coaching change especially when they know the possibility exists going in??

I have to agree with that. I would think that in this day and age of constant coaching changes due to firings, can’t refuse job offers, etc., that players have to be aware that the coach who recruited them may not be the coach they play their entire collegiate career for.
The reason it MAY not be killing us RIGHT NOW is that we are not in a signing period at this time (I think it just ended didn’t it??? and the next signing period isn’t until spring right)? IF, I’m correct on these dates, we should have a clearer picture of Lutz’ situation by the next time a kid can sign anyway.

As you said, we just had a sigining period. We still have open spots for next year though, don’t you think we could have used some of that “clarification” before then? Also, that situation affects sigining and recruiting. It is very unlikely that a recruit says you know I might go to Wake Forest or Charlotte, I will see what their coaching situation is on signing day. I’m not saying it’s unlikely, but I find it a safe assumption that a chnk of recruits may look us over just because of the uncertainty.
The Lutz contract situation certainly isn’t helping with recruiting, but neither are the facts that we generally haven’t played good basketball the last 2+ years, attendance is declining, and we haven’t won a NCAA tournament game since 2001.
If Lutz can get things back on track, we will start winning some games and he will get his extension, but I don’t think you can give him an extension just to help with recruiting. We aren’t losing too many guys this year, so we should be in decent shape for next year already.
The next 4 games are tough and will be very telling of how this season (and Lutz’ future here) will go. Hopefully Lutz will have them fired up and refocused after the Monmouth loss. If not, we could be 4-5 or 3-6 in a couple weeks and the Lutz bashing will be at an all time high.

Maybe they’ll like next bunch better.

Jim, speaking of recruiting, why hasn’t there been an announcement about Bowden?
Also, have you heard any other info on the recruiting front? Transfers? Now that we have a scholarship to give for next semester, it would be great to get another transfer like Gerrity to come in for the spring, which would allow him play next spring. Any word?
No, it is not.
Please hootie, this is just a naive statement. Anytime your coach isn’t guaranteed a few years, it hurts with recruiting. Wonder why we only have 1 commit so far, and really no targets. Wonder why most of our targets for 08 have went elsewhere? Including local talent.
I visit the ETSU boards a good bit and their coach just recently got an extension. I saw a poster griping about the fact how the administration SHOULD’T have waited, because it put a hurt on their early recruiting efforts with the contract being up in the air. With the season Bartow had last season he should have received an extension, but the administration didn’t want to pony up right after the season, thus costing them in their recruiting efforts.

I don’t have a problem with the administration not wanting to the extend his contract. If they want for Lutz to earn his contract by winning this year then that’s fine by me. But, if Lutz has a down year this year and they still extend his contract then that’s where I have a problem.

We can’t doing anything with that scholarship this spring so why waste it and screw up the team again next year. Just sit on it for a legit recruit instead of a transfer and we won’t have any what if situations like we have with Gerrity right now.

NB, what constitutes a down year? Going into this season, I figured finishing .500 would be a major accomplishment.

I don’t know that’s for the administration to decide. I certainly think if the team can finish .500 or above that would be enough for Lutz to get an extension.
