It was brought up on the Dalonte Hill thread, maybe tongue in cheek, that let’s see what recruit Dalonte would bring with him…Beasley in reverse!
All kidding aside, maybe Judy should consider just what(who) a potential candidate could bring with him…as one of the qualifications. Dalonte would also need to bring some experienced assistants with them to help bench coach, as he doesn’t have experience. Anyone know if Butch Pierre has been an “X and O” guy since he’s left?
Is anyone else upset with the fact that the whole coaching staff was fired?? I don’t know a single player who would want to stay on a team with not a single coach they know.
Most new head coaches bring with them their whole staffs. It may be that the new coach will hire someone back, but that will be their decision. I just have to think that if we are going to try to make an investment that it is going to be a coach that we are going to pay more than we paid Lutz.
Gillen was absolutely terrible.
At UVa. Not saying I want him on a list of candidates, but there really hasn’t been anyone who has been successful in Charlottesville since Terry Holland.
BTW, Gillen won 202 games at Xavier, then took Providence to the Elite Eight, prior to replacing Jeff Jones at UVa. Had a winning record with Cavaliers, but only one NCAA out of the five postseason trips out during his seven seasons in the ACC.
Hey, if nothing else, there’s always this Gillen quote after PC had beaten the Blue Devils in the 1997 tourney: “Certainly Duke is Duke, they’re on TV more than Leave it to Beaver reruns.”
I think Judy will at least interview a DII HC…that has been a pattern of her hires lately.
What about Ron Niekamp of Findlay. They won the DII National Championship going undefeated. They also won their conference 7 of the last 8 years. He has never had a losing season in 25 years as a coach, and has a 15-7 record in DII NCAA’s.
Some of the coaches in DII can flat out coach.
Being an Iowa fan I am going to state that Iowa didn’t give Lickliter a chance. All of the best players from Alford transferred out and he hasn’t even gotten a class through yet.
Still not sure you want to bring him in.
I don’t see Jacobson making the ‘lateral’ move to Charlotte from UNI, but recruiting kids to Charlotte would be easier than Cedar Falls.
I am also hesitant on Jacobson because of his similarity to McDermott and how McDermott has struggled at IState.
What about Bill Laimbeer or some other coach that can’t quite get a interview in the NBA? If he can get a bigger crowd to games at Halton than Time Warner (or whatever it is called) it might be a good showcase for him (I know I am off in left field with the idea).
Gillen is Awesome, I’ll never forget when he upset Carolina in Charlottesville when Chapel Hill was #2 or something, and he called timeout with like 10 sec to go to celebrate, he’s dancing on a chair as time expires. Then Carolina beats them later in the year, they call timeout, and Gillen is infuriated.

It is true about the UVA job. But I think what hurts him is that he was getting very good classes and not succeeding with them. 1 NCAA trip in 7 seasons.
I just think hiring a guy that was fired somewhere else is a tough sell. Regardless of whether it’s the ACC or anywhere.
Remember the key will be not the first coach we go after, the 2nd coach will be our new head coach. If AD is in trouble, politically you have to try for a good/established coach first, if we can’t make the money work, then they are off the hook. So the 2nd coach will be key.
I think it will have to be regional guy, someone from NC up to Philly (since we are in A10). My bet DC/metro area or NC background.
Not sure I understand the firing the whole staff thing ? seems odd at this stage. Especially since Kummer was alum, and close to Watkins/mullins etc.

It just seems to me if a Booster wrote the check to usher Lutz out they would have also discussed the potential replacements and the costs associated.
I think it is safe to say a high dollar HC will want well paid Assistants
I would expect that but I have no idea what Mox was making and what qualifies as a highly paid asst. It was an honest question.
