Queens postgame thoughts

Deuce looked good but we are uber thin if Voncina can’t play. Braz needs more touches in the paint. Shamari was Shamari. Barnett was so-so and Sirin can shoot the rock. Derrio was solid but over dribbled on several occasions.

Man 2 man the entire game, bigs switched a lot on the interior.

for those who didn’t get it…

Briscoe can flat out shoot but is not a PG at all. He penetrates but can’t finish or make the right decision in traffic and gets picked a lot.

Green looked solid but also is not a PG.

We need a PG…don’t know if Luka is it…but would like to see.

Shamari was good but still loves the jumper more than anything else.

Sirin can shoot…which gives us 3 legit outside threats.

Barnett didn’t show much and Phil still plays soft and little for a big man.

Anjuan isn’t as explosive as he was as a Freshman…I’m guessing due to injuries…and that takes a chunk out of his effectiveness.

Defense looked OK in spurts…some trapping early…but a lot of easy looks in spurts too.

Alot of movement on offense…still alot of 3’s…still struggle sometimes to feed the post (but we don’t really have a true back to the basket post player to feed).

Overall…a decent first showing for a new coach and new system with just several weeks to prep.

Having 3 real shooters will help us this year.

i agree w/ your ā€˜overall’.

I was surprised just how well Brisco could shoot. Everything that’s been mentioned is pretty much the deal. I’ve always been disappointed in Braswell’s inside game though. Lacks any kind of power and explosiveness. Overall, I feel okay with our squad. Not sure what we are going to do if they can’t get Luka cleared… And oh yeah, ā€œAirrr Ballll, Airrr Ballll!ā€

What was the final score?

This is pretty spot on.

I wish we had someone other than Shamari that was a legit threat to score every possession.

Better offensive movement than I have seen in a LONG time. However, we do not have a true point guard to catalyze this offense/take care of the ball well. Turnovers are a huge concern for me.

We have options at the 3 but no complete SF, same as last year. Nickerson is a huge get for this team.

We have shooters. If we had the potential to get streaky dangerous last year… this year will put that all to shame.

I like the man to man defense, but it could be better, and will be better with Dew and KJ.

I’m interested to see if this lineup will be similar to what is used in games: Sirin 28 minutes, Barnett 26 minutes, Jones 23 minutes, Braswell 20 minutes??? Wilderness 19 minutes. It coulda been that Major wanted Sirin and JB to get more game experience cuz we will be needing them more this year. I hope to see Braswell utilized more during the regular season.

It looked as if the team was playing a new style already, I like it. I am not sold on this team being a tournament team yet (it’s a shame Spears is gone after this year), but I like what’s going on and I can’t wait for the regular season.

We came down with a lot of offensive rebounds…saw we had 11 at half (12 defensive) so that was nice to see. That’s the way it should be against smaller teams and I noticed JB hustled to get 2 offensive rebounds on back to back possessions.

Liked the pick and roll…that will give Deuce a lot of scoring opportunities and will open our guys up. Huge lack of solid screening and movement in our offense for years…we weren’t polished but definitely liked what I saw in that regard.

Man to man hurt us on some possessions with guys either not fighting through screens or not switching effectively, but I think that, too, will get worked out. Overall there was hustle on both ends of the court.

One enormously huge thing that I noticed that I have NEVER witnessed in all my years as a Niners fan is use of the PUMP FAKE. It is a simple fundamental move that can do wonders, and we used it…several times…to perfection. Deuce made one Kobe-like move in the paint that left my jaw dropped. Both JB and Sirin were able to create some space using it right after they received a pass and moving to the dribble. It has always been such a pet peeve of mine that we don’t use such a simple offensive maneuver that creates space and is easy to perform and I’m impressed that it looks to be a big fundamental difference so far.

94-57

i think we had 94 and i think they had around 60.

edit: earlyniner beat me too it by a few seconds.

Lots of sloppy play tonight, but it’s the first game.

I thought we shot the ball well, and the bigs battled inside for rebounds on the misses.

Deuce will be fine at PG, he’s not a pass first guard and that’s fine. He made a couple good looks in the 2nd half when he reverted back to his natural shoot first form. You could tell he was trying to be a pass first guard in the 1st half, and he wasn’t very good at it. We whine on this board if we have a PG who can pass but isn’t a good shooter, and we whine if we have a PG who can shoot but isn’t as polished of a passer. It’s a lose/lose unless Chris Paul walks through the door.

Our defense was slow on rotations but that’ll get better as we play more. Good to see us stick with one defense the entire game instead of switching every 5 minutes.

JB played good defense and Gokhan lit it up from behind the arc. Shamari made his usual fadeaways (some were very tough!) and he beasted up down low a few times by getting rebounds, finishing, or drawing the foul.

Really liked the hustle out there especially from our guards. Deuce & Derrio aren’t afraid to get on the floor and get after the ball.

I hope we stop complaining about the Gardner Webb game now. We need as many games as we can before Charleston.

We played hard but extremely sloppy. Not valuing the ball on fast breaks, way too many turnovers (I’d understand against a small team that presses, but Queens didnt press), weak rebounding at times, and some absolute bullfighter D here and there.

We do not have a PG. That is extremely concerning to me. We also dont have one signed for 2011. I’ve seen enough of Luka to think we still need another one.

IMO, our 11-21 shooting night from outside masked a lot of weaknesses. We don’t have a complete player at the 3, we don’t have a PG, and our post is thin. We have two undersized 2Gs, and a bunch of incomplete players at the 3.

… but aside from the PG, these are the same problems we had last year.

We really arent a different team unless we can get Luka eligible. We’re just playing man to man, with mixed results.

I did like the hustle, and Deuce was red hot. But I don’t think the people screaming for Lutz’s head wanted to see so many 3’s. I felt like our ball movement was very mediocre, and it started at the PG.

Don’t get me wrong. If one of our 3’s emerges as a complete player and we can discover a PG, we’ll be okay despite weak rebounding. But that’s a lot of IFs.

We should have beaten Queens much more handily than we did. They were even sloppier with the ball than we were. And oh my the airballs…

Can’t really add too much to what’s been said. We looked alright. We struggled for the first few minutes but the intensity was markedly better towards the end of the first half and throughout the second half. We also shot around 60% from 3 point range IIRC, which is encouraging. Deuce was impressive (although I think he’s somewhat turnover prone especially within 17 feet or so from the basket) but overall I think he’s going to be just fine orchestrating and some nights he is going to be our top-scorer.
m
Chisox made a comment about how he wishes he could put Shamari’s intensity into Phil Jones’ body and make him an NBA lottery pick. Couldn’t agree more. I really wish our front court would stop looking so soft around the basket and just fucking wreck someone once in a while or throw-down a put back jam.

There is no reason why this team shouldn’t win 20 games, but we definitely have a long way to go to get there. It’s early, but we’ll improve.

I think it wasn’t the fact that we took so many 3’s, it’s the quality of the 3’s. There was too much standing around and swinging it around the perimeter to jack one up in Lutz’s offense. Hell Duke and Butler both put up a ton of 3’s and they played in the natl championship last year.

Deuce didn’t wow me at the point, but I am trying to keep in mind that he hasn’t played in a college game in over a year.

We knew going into it that Deuce was a scorer and not a pass-first PG. Deuce will have to play major minutes at the point. I didn’t get to see the game, without Voncina, who will get the backup PG minutes? Derrio?

Derrio started and played the most minutes at the PG. Deuce backed him up. Whether its from a lack of depth or a mindset that we’re not going to have a tiny backcourt, neither of them played 2G. We played Barnett there most of the night. Without Luka, you can get used to that.

Barnett and Sirin are going to have to step it up from last year at 2G. With Sherrill and Dewhurst down and Voncina potentially ineligible, there are plenty of minutes available at the 2 and 3.

I’m just happy that we finally have inbounds plays, and don’t have to throw the ball back to the free throw line in the backcourt just to get the ball inbounds.
