R.I.P Jerome Whitehead...

…you beat the Niners but not your personal demons. R.I.P with McGuire and Majerus.

Any Niner fan who has never watched that video you linked needs to do so. To those rooks, it is one of the defining moments in Niner Basketball History.

It’s sheer torture to watch it more than once. Absolute torture. The brightest moment moment in our sports history, but also the most devastating loss in Niner history. I was 2 1/2 when that happened, and I feel that way about it. For those that lived it, I don’t see how they stand to ever watch it again.

I’ve actually never heard the story of that game. I’ve always heard something about offensive goaltending? Does anybody know what I’m talking about?

Watch the video of the finish of the game in the link above. See what you think.

I’ve heard trhe stories but that’s the first time I’ve watched it.

Other than the lucky catch of the inbounds pass…I don’t see anything else that would be gut wrentching.

I see no controversy either.

He clearly gets the shot off before the clock hits zero…so what’s the deal?

As a fan…the sheer luck of the inbounds pass would be enough to devastate me for years…but I see no additional issues or controversy.

Funny that one thing UK gets criticized for (not defending Grant Hill on the inbounds pass to Laettner) is something that Rose chose to do.

Personally I always thought the better play is to defend 4 recipients of the ball with 5 defenders.

Offensive goal tending.

Where?

Don’t see it.

Is Cornbread the guy who put us on the map, or the guy who missed the inbounds pass and kept us out of the Championship Game. You decide.

That’s the most disappointing part of that last play. Cornbread had position and somehow let the ball go right through his hands!!!

Both.

Plus he missed a 1 and 1 a bit earlier that would have broken the 49 all tie. None the less, HE was the star that helped get us to the Final 4. Period. I was at the game and will NEVER dog Max for all he did for us THEN. I still cannot watch the replay without getting physically ill, so I don’t. I always thought Whitehead climbed over Max’s back (no call) to get the ball anyway.

On another note, if we had played the holes in the final game, we’d have beaten their asses.

That play was shown over and over and over again for a long time. Some years later ESPN showed the plays that had been controversial and replayed the most times over the years. This play was near the top of the list. Almost every basketball fan in the country in the late 70s and early 80s was familiar with this play and identified us through this play and Cedric Maxwell.

And now I get to start the new year with visions of our last second loss replayed once again.

Funny thing about that play- if they don’t make it it still goes to OT, no guarantees.

I think a lot of our fans are still under the impression we were up one

On another sad note some may not remember but I’ll NEVER forget, we started that game down 25-9. :o :’( >:(
