Can someone comment on the current liklihood of Phil Jones and Wilderness playing next year. I am sure it has been posted somewhere else, but I just want to know the status of these guys.
I cant wait for next season. Even if we are .500 or so again. I think just watching the new guys grow and develop will be exciting!
Enjoy that excitement for a long as you canâŚbut mark my words, if you continue to support 49er sports after graduationâŚthere WILL BE A TIME where that is NOT ENOUGH for you.
Is doesnât matter if itâs basketball, football or baseball. When are a season ticket purchaser, have a family & a job and have endured multiple âgrow and developâ cyclesâŚyou will get tired of it.
'til thenâŚenjoy the innocence of youth.
Symbolic. As you seem to be growing into the new Lefty right before our eyes.
Damn, even my homeboys are killing me.

There gonna lead us to the Final 4 next seasonâŚwhadda ya mean their status?
ok, ok, now that I put down the bottle of green-tinted drugs.
I think its a fair question. I asked earlier this week specifically about Jones, but never saw an answer.

Wildnerness is signed, eligible for the Fall now that he has gone the prep school route. Jones is here, in school, and as long as he earns 24 credits before next Fall. Gerrity is here, sitting on the bench, practicing, good to go second semester. Gaby - check. Barnett - check. Dewhurst - check. One more to give, most likely to be Lamont Mack (top 20 JUCO, 6-7, athletic, rebounder/scorer).
This Year - Next Year
Jamison/Barnett - Barnett is much better at shooting the 3 than JJ, but the tradeoff is Barnettâs weakness at defense and we will lose Jamisonâs rebounding and versatility. Barnett is a project at SF and probably wonât play much in his first year.
Drayton/Wilderness - Wilderness is a SF that will be relied upon to provide interior offense at the 4. He is only 6â5".
Coleman/Mack* - Mack is a versatile SF. The tradeoff is we lose depth at center.

Iâd put:
Jamison/Wilderness (tough, def, score around the basket)
Drayton/Mack (versatile 3-4)
Coleman/Jones

You mean Phil canât play til second semester next year?

No, I typed it wrong. Phil will be available at the start of the season. That was meant for Gerrity (Eligible 2nd semester). I guess that means on the first day of 2nd semester classes?

Usually those guys can play the day aftyer 1st semester exams, so he might see some december action.
I know it is usually said to be a full calender year, but it seems like everyone gets around it.

Still too many SFs IMO. If you want to be really technical, we probably started this year with 2 PGs, 2 SGs, 7 SFs, 2 PFs and 1 C (Big Phil). [We responded by moving the 2 PFs (Courtney and Coleman) to Center, and 2 SFs (EJ and Booker) to PFs and even moved Leemire to PG.]
Next year, I really like our guard depth, but we look much smaller. Scary small.
Since Charlotteâs MO around the A-10 is âcanât get good looks inside vs. opponents with a decent frontcourt, so just concentrate on taking away decent looks around the perimeterâ I was hoping that we would look to fix an exploited weakness. Big Phil is still a mystery and you know that any opponent with half-a-brain is going to try to get Phil in foul trouble.
I donât think lamont mack is the answer, maybe he is just what is available. We need a garbage man like Withers was. If mack get his points off of rebounds and inside the arc shots, then that will be good. If he just stands around the arc like DA does, then it isnât going to benefit us.
It doesnât matter who the players are or how good they are, Iâve got one guarantee for you:
The 3 will be alive, my friends. We will always lead the conference in # of 3âs taken, I donât care what our personnel is.
Iâm even going to add a note that I expect Phil Jones to pop a 3 up in one of his first 5 games for us. Just watch.
i dont agree that we will be small. i think we will be bigger than this year. phil is 6â10", gaby 7â3" wingspan, wilderness. we may not be huge but we will have a lot of good rebounders.

. . . and thatâs a good quality to have. We need more Lefty and more Gill. I also look forward to the next season. I think itâll be a very exciting one. The only reason will stop me from supporting and following is if we re-hire Hal Wissel. Go Niners !
. . . We need more Lefty, more Gill, and TO BRING BACK THE GOLDDUSTER THREAD!
FIXED !!!
I like the title of this thread. After an awful year that canât end soon enough, Iâm glad to speculate about next year. At least we are undefeated so far next season!
As for Bobby changing his style, I wouldnât count on it. However, if any of our inside guys can do ANYTHING offensively, we may have some hope. If it wasnât for EJ this yearâŚwell I donât even want to think about it. We need somebody (preferably more than one) with a post move, any move, a hook shot, spin move, something. We need somebody with a short range jump shot. If we can do a couple of these, well, maybe we will only shoot about 52 3s per game (sarcasm).
Defensively we have to change. Pick one or two defenses and stay with it. Just donât think Bobby will do it.
Obviously there is no way to predict how new guys will doâŚIti didnât work outâŚmaybe Phil willâŚetc. At least for me, next year is Bobbyâs year to show that he can improve the team. Assistants do helpâŚbut if we have another sub .500 season and quite a few blowoutsâŚI think many of us will be shouting for a new coach (or have some already done that?!).

I agree with you. Lutz has never proven to be able or willing to coach any other style. To me, it doesnât matter who the coach is, it is what they teach the players. So, those of you who constantly make excuses for our losses are not being honest with yourselves. The lessons, work, and knowledge provided in practices will show in the product that is put on the floor. With good coaching, even with young players or less talented players, as the season goes on you can see improvement and are able to tell what the players are learning. With Lutz, the product you see at the beginning of the season is pretty much what you see at the end of the season.
Truly be honest with yourselves, and think about it, and ask yourself the following: After watching us play all season, can you truly see development in the individual players and also the team as a group?
Truly be honest with yourselves, and think about it, and ask yourself the following: After watching us play all season, can you truly see development in the individual players and also the team as a group?Even more disturbing is the observation that this current class of freshman (outside of Dewhurst since we don't have much to go on because he was injured) will be of little help in the future. If we are counting on Ian, Booker or Phaler playing major minutes over the next couple of years, we will continue to struggle.
Enough amateur analysis here. Thereâs only one reason to believe in next season⌠we are Niners, and our blood (for the most part) runs green.
