Remembering Vic Bubas

Remembering Vic Bubas: Instrumental in the reason Coach Jeff Mullins came to Charlotte. Vic Bubas was the Commissioner of the Sun Belt Conference at the time Jeff Mullins took the job.

I was in Charlotte when Bubas left an administrative job at Duke to be Commissioner of the Sun Belt Conference. He was respected and had clout.

As the previous poster said, he knew Mullins wanted a new challenge and that Charlotte needed a big name. Mullins was an All American at Duke, a NBA All Star, and a successful businessman after basketball.

Bubas took Duke to its first NCAA Tournament and 3 Final Fours. Recruiting wore him out, so he moved into administration and being a Commissioner when those were promotions from coaching.

Though probably best known as the men’s basketball coach at Dukes in the 1960s, Vic Bubas also served as the first commissioner of the Sun Belt Conference, 1976-1990. Among his players at Duke was Jeff Mullins, 1964 ACC player of the year and later coach of the Charlotte 49ers.

I did not know all of this. Thank you for sharing and may Vic rest in peace.
