GREENFIELD – The 19-year-old son of the University of Massachusetts director of athletics died today in a car crash on Interstate-91, state police said.
Justin P. McCutcheon of Amherst was declared dead at the scene. State police received a cell phone call at 1:50 a.m. today of a car driving the wrong way in a southbound lane with headlights off.
McCutcheon was driving a 2001 Volkswagen Jetta. Just between the ramps at Exit 26 above the Route 2 rotary, he collided head-on with a tandem tractor-trailer truck driven by Thomas E. Carlton, 36, of Bristol, Vt., police said. Carlton was not injured, police said.
Senior Associate Athletics Director Thorr Bjorn of the Amherst-based university’s Athletic Department issued the following statement today: “We express our deepest sympathy to John, Sue and the entire McCutcheon family on the tragic loss of their son. Our hearts and prayers are with them in this difficult time.”
Police has to close southbound I-91 for nine hours to clear 250 gallons of diesel fuel that had spilled from the truck’s ruptured tanks.
This is the second fatal accident in 24 hours in the Franklin County stretch of I-91. Mark W. Fontaine, 34, of Pittsfield, died in a single car accident in Bernardston early yesterday morning.
