Screw you, Apple

The new Macbooks were announced today http://www.apple.com/macbook/

No mouse button, no matte finish, cheesy HP-esque looks. Worst of all, they eliminated the firewire port. Now you have to use the VASTLY inferior USB connection for any digital video camera, external harddrive, etc.

All for the low, low price of $1,300 (entry level). What a rip-off.

Mac fanboys, defend that one.

Looks like an attempt to get at a bigger chunk of the public…

I’ve got last year’s model (so I won’t be getting a new one), but I know of several people planning to buy this one - first time buyers. I haven’t spoken with them after it was officially announced though.

if its the same pricepoint as before (i can’t remember what the current/old version cost)… the lack of firewire won’t matter to 95% of future buyers. most things are moving to USB 2.0 and/or eSATA anyway. as far as the singular larger multi-touch trackpad… not sure i like the no-button… but i’m sure with time like anything else people will get used to it.

too bad there isn’t a sub$1000 model… that would seriously expand their reach.

I don’t like the firewire port going away, but I read somewhere that there was a connector that would adapt firewire to ethernet so the speeds are not lessened, but I’m not sure if that is legit.

so will target mode work over USB now? That was one of the biggest benefits of the mac.

Negative. USB is CPU powered, so target mode will not work.

Firewire: significantly faster than USB
Firewire: Bus powered
Firewire: Target mode
Firewire: Daisy-chainable
Firewire: standard on pro audio gear and digital video cameras

USB: a lot of cell phones have it

WRETCH

the new macbook pro has the firewire 800 which they say has an adapter for firewire 400.

HP-esque design? Whaaa?

Those are sexy as hell. I have the first generation of new MacBooks and I don’t plan on getting a new one anytime soon. It still works amazingly.

edit: omfg they made the entire trackpad the button??? and it’s made of glass??? that’s amazing, how did nobody think of this before??? that alone might make me change my mind about buying this (well that and the new spiffy graphics card, LED screen, aluminum exterior etc…)

ive had my macbook pro for a year and a half and ive had zero problems and it hasnt slowed down the slightest bit. best purchase of my life

i need to buy a new mac soon, and i’m excited about today’s annoucement.

the macbooks are now as fast as the current macbook pros for $700 less.

the loss of firewire doesn’t bother me. i rarely used it and would rather have another usb port.

do the apple stores have them on display yet? i’d really like to try it.

You’re telling me the spaceship you bought in Melmac wasn’t the best purchase of your life?

if you don’t like it don’t get it.

True, but the Macbook pro starts at $2,000. That means in order to have a blasted $10 firewire port, you have to shell out an additional $700 (minimum).

Oh, thanks, yeah. For a second there I thought I had to buy one, but thanks for pointing that out.

facepalm

Who in the world ever uses firewire anymore anway??? It’s pretty much outdated technology. I can’t remember one single time that I’ve used my firewire in the two years I’ve had this MacBook. What camcorders even come packed with a firewire wire anymore? They all pre-pack USB cables.

It’s not outdated. It’s lightyears ahead of USB for all the reasons I mentioned above.

All video and audio gear that’s even barely above consumer level use firewire.

But I suppose that’s the problem. Apple is more interetsed in appealing to the “average joe” than to making rock-solid products that are better than the competition. The only problem is, if they’re not better than the competition, they’d better drop their prices.

Don’t worry, I won’t. I bought two Dell laptops over the last three months with a combined total less than the entry price of the new Mac. I’ve read all the Mac lover’s opinions on here, but for double the price it needs to be able to do household chores also. Since the Mac can’t do that, I’ll stick with my PC’s.

I’ve never owned an apple computer, but I’m loving my new ipod touch.
