So before we go through the first real test of our schedule, here are the +/- averages for everyone that has played in at least 3 games. This came from StatSheet.
Braswell +13.4
Henry +11.4
Barnett + 7.2
Green + 6.1
Mayfield + 5.0
Briscoe + 0.5
Williams - 2.8
Sherrill - 5.6
Voncina - 7.1
Nickerson Not Listed
Not sure why this stat doesn’t show up for EVic. It’s been blank on every game. Easy to see who the catalysts are for this team with this stat.
I am not a big proponent of +/- use for basketball.
It works in hockey, because scoring is less frequent.
A guy who plays garbage minutes can have a great +/- in basketball.
Yeah, though in this case the top 3 guys make sense, as they appear to be our top 3 players to this point.
Let me start by saying that I have no problem with the current starting lineup. Maybe we could flip Green and Briscoe, but I like the idea of Briscoe being a scoring punch off of the bench.
A factor misleading about the +/- stat is that someone coming off of the bench is going to play more minutes with others coming off of the bench. So, for example, if Sherrill and EVN started in place of Braswell and Barnett, you would more than likely see Green’s +/- go down while Briscoe’s would go up.

With Braswell and Barnett in the game, the team has scoring options on the floor and Green is more for defense and passing (though I’d love to see him start hitting some shots). When they come out for a breather and Sherrill and EVN come in, they need a consistent scoring option (that’s Briscoe). I think that’s partly why he’s shooting so much too, he’s being asked to carry the scoring load for the “2nd unit”, so to speak. Then whoever is playing better into the 2nd half gets more minutes after that. When Voncina was still playing, he would spell Henry at pg and Briscoe primarily alternated sg with Green.
I’m not sure how well this is working, primarily because Briscoe has more trouble as the only scoring option when defenses have less to worry about at the other positions, which is probably partly why he’s shot poorly in the first half (I also think he’s pressing a bit to carry the team at these times). Later in the game, when Barnett is drawing guys on the perimeter and Braswell is drawing double and triple teams down low, Briscoe has more lanes for that short jumper. Of course, in the last game, he also did a nice job passing the ball and playing defense towards the end. I think he probably would’ve gotten more minutes in the game if he hadn’t gotten 2 fouls in the first half and also shot a little better (I think he was 0-5 in the 1st half).
Anyway, that’s my guess. We’ll see how Major changes it up with Voncina out. Put Briscoe at pg some? I hope we don’t have to play Henry 30+ minutes every game, as he like most freshmen will likely wear down by the end of the longer, more intense season. Though maybe his football-basketball background will help.
