they have no clue. i was talking to a state grad earlier today and he asked me if i heard the news.
me: what news?
state grad: that rick barnes would be the nc state coach next year.
me: but he has stated numerous times he is happy at texas and does not want to go to state.
state grad: oh no. why should any coach not want to coach in the acc.
me: he was in the acc before leaving for texas.
state grad: but he left for more money
me: and i doubt if state will match the money texas is paying him
state grad: you mean other schools pay as much as acc schools?
me: apparently. you just said he left the acc for more money. it’s been nice talking to you but i need to go NOW.

:lmao: :lmao: :lmao:
That’s good stuff.
reports are indicating that barnes rejected 1.7 million from state today.
hes only making 1.3 at texas, so apparently more money wasnt enough to get him to state
Barnes isn’t stoopid, he knows no one will be better than third for the next 10 years or so.

I think Fowler would have been the next one on the hot seat if he had not made a legitimate attempt to land Barnes, even if he knew he would be rejected.

That and I truly believe that the behavior of NC State fans has become a major factor in anyone wanting to coach there. Coaches are very aware of the criticism that comes from the fans. After hearing/reading the comments of Wolfpack fans over the last 2-3 years, who in their right mind would want to subject themselves to that type of crap? They hail Amato who has done NOTHING since taking the job but slam Herb who has taken them to 5 straight NCAA at-large bids. I don’t blame Barnes one bit for turning down the pay raise. Sometimes, extra money just isn’t worth the baggage that comes along with it.
Having to coach against Roy/K and likely competing for 3rd place could certainly deter someone from finding that opening appealing. But I think Wolfpack fans play a bigger role in someone wanting this job. If what Herb accomplished wasn’t good enough, then you’re putting yourself in a lose-lose situation by taking over that program. State fans need to realize that they’re always going to be 3rd fiddle at best in that conference and should just be happy with the success they have had. Unless they bring in someone like Calipari (could happen) or Pitino (won’t happen), that program will likely take a big step backwards with Herb’s departure.
State fans are idiots though so as long as they bring in someone with personality and charisma, they probably won’t even care if they never sniff the post season.
What’s with the Tom Crean speculation? I don’t pretend to know what his mindset is, but they guy just completed a very successful inaugural Big East season, he makes good money thanks to the FF run, and he’s already turned down the Illinois job (sorry State fans, at this point in time, that’s a better job). Why in the world would he leave?

He is rumored for the Oklahoma job.
“They hail Amato who has done NOTHING since taking the job”
If this is true then it seems like State is a low pressure place for a coach

Sounds alot like what is going on here, except for it’s not as brutal.

People have made a similar statement to me as a Charlotte fan. “We should just be happy with making the tournament.” What’s wrong with fans wanting more???
NC State is underachieving. Charlotte is on par or better based on what we have to work with. Give me NCSU’s fan base, local interest, alumni support, financial support, facilities, prestige and I would want and expect MUCH, MUCH more.
There’s no reason a big time coach (Barnes, Calipari, Montgomery) can’t get them to the elite level.

By that logic so is FSU, Maryland, USC, and multitudes of other Big programs. NCSU has had clear definitive successes in the past 5 seasons. Whether Herb would ever have gotten them to the top is unclear, however he merited more time than what he recieved.
Maryland won a National Championship this decade and has consistently beat Duke. FSU, USC, Auburn, Georgia, Clemson, Miss, etc have all underachieved. Herb was there 10 years. He would never the the talent they need to beat UNC and Duke.
a psychologist could probably do a case study on state fans. in football they think they are top 15 quality program, reality is they have been mediocre .500 squad under amato except for the one year they only lost 4 games. they also benefit from weak scheduling… Yet they love amato, and of course Philip rivers is a god.
in basketball they think they should be a top 10 program year in and year out but aren’t and a coach like Sendek who takes them to 5 straight tourney’s with a Sweet 16(in a season they were lucky to get a bid)…isn’t cutting it and had to go?
fascinating, I just wish we had a football team to be delusional about.
They don’t love Amato anymore. They booed him loudly several times last year and he’s moving closer to being on the hotseat.
yeah, now that you mention it I do remember some hate towards Amato last season…although I think he salvaged it some by bs’ing his way to a bowl game at end of season.
I had to choose between going to NC State and UNC Charlotte, I chose Charlotte because NC State is so arrogant about everything. Their academics, their athletics, everything. They think they are top 10 in the nation at everything they attempt. It sickens me that anyone could be so arrogant about anything. Especially when they get demolished by their rivals every year at every sport.

Funny. State has received 5 straight at-large bids in one of the toughest conferences in the country (though down some this year) and got past the 2nd round last year of the NCAA Tournament. We find ourselves fighting for a bubble spot only to hope we get the auto-bid each season and a first round flop.
More fans, a bigger arena, larger alumni base and a history of success equates to a better product on the court? There are plenty of teams out there that trump us in those catagories that don’t have the success State has each year.
You really need to put the “If Lutz had State’s resources…” (which is your underlying point yet again) to rest because it’s still nothing more than speculation.
