A very long thread on football at Charlotte on the UNC football board

The expected mix of opinions can be found there

clt could care less what the blue fairys think.

Thanks Mike. Help us keep the heat on the current Admin. Maybe come up with a fabricated story about football being approved? How about running an article on 49’ers volunteering their professional skills? I think that we have engineers, architects, MBA’s, accountants…that would gladly volunteer their time for football.

When was the last time they had a football team. They are in a class with Dukie football. What a joke UNC FOOTBALL?

In just four pages of that thread, we have:

jimmyhat. is this you? i noticed this post in that thread.

I am actually Chairman of a group called the Charlotte 49er Football Intiative. It was formed last spring with the goal of bringing a team to Charlotte. We created the website www.charlotte49erfootball.com and have gotten a tremendous response. We have had 700 people sign up and pledge support to the cause as well as pledge over $450,000 to start up costs have sold over 1600 season tickets.

This all has led to football being discussed at the highest level ever for UNC Charlotte and on Feb 17th the Board of Trustees will meet and vote to have a feasability study done and I predict we will be playing football by 2012 starting at 1-AA and eventually moving up to 1-A, hopefully in time for the next conference realignment.

Here is a great piece that aired recently:

this is the same link as in the first post and that is me that she is interviewing.

Hear, hear.

some good stuff in there. It probably about 50/50 for and against. Most people cite money as the reason against, and most people cite the athletics department just needs it as a the reason for.

One guy made a good point about how the talent pool in NC is growing b/c of the growth of the state. He mentioned that schools have had scholarship reductions of the years, and that it only makes sense that there be another football school in the state.

one guy said that his daughter was on a recruiting trip to UNC Charlotte, and that the coach said that we plan to have football in the next few years, even pointed out where the stadium would be.

DONT LET ANY CHAPEL HILL PEOPLE TOUCH ANY ASPECT OF OUR FOOTBALL PROGRAM

DOOMED… WE’RE DOOMED.

ALL I CAN SEE NOW IS THAT HORRIBLE BABY BLUE AND 1 WIN SEASONS OH GOD HELPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP

I liked the U. of Charlotte title. Made me feel special.

Other wise the real title, uncc, makes me feel like a pawn.

according to one fan, apparently, we’re going to be ‘competiting’ with WCU and App, not UNC-CH, for recruits… hmm.
bring on the 49ers wcu will destroy them.

go catamounts! go heels!
LOL

Chapel Hill might not have had football success as in BCS Bowls in the past but you take a look across almost every NFL Roster and there is a Heel on there, the problem with them is that the post-Mack Brown period has seen John Bunting not utilize the talent he had (Willie Parker ring a bell?).

i feel dirty just reading those screen names. I don’t think I could stomach a visit to their web page

Some have already said it but if I remember correctly UNC-Ch has been battling Duke for the ACC Cellar Dweller Championship, the last few years. The real reason they’re pissed and one person hinted at it… guess where the hot bed for talent in the state comes from? Good ol’ Charlotte.

makes you wonder if we’ll experience any additional friction from the higher-ups in the unc system. i thought the funny response was the one that said the state would probably use tax money to pay for our program. wrong. where do these guys come from.

I don't know why they hate us or resent us so much, but it sure feels like they do and would give us more friction than any other school in the system.

Its the same problem we have been having the whole time we led this campaign - disinformation. There are tons of bogus facts and rumors floating around so its what you have to expect, especially from people who arn't directly involved in the issue. Even amongst ourselves, we have had a large number of people still not knowing that if we do start football, our only option is D-1AA as a starting level. It just seems to be very hard to get everyone informed about the facts.

“ourselves” includes Phil Dubois, Judy Rose, and members of the Board of Trustees.

It kills me that it was a concern from the retreat of “where do we start football at?”

I would also like to add that Judy Rose, an athletics director, and Phil Dubois, suposedly a college athletics fan, KNOW for a fact that we have to start out at D1-AA. The nonconcrete lingering of possible D1A startup is only a fear tactic that shows a higher price tag.

If you read the context of the remarks, he was just saying that it would be just their luck (or something) if we did get tax help like UNC-R supposedly does, because it has been said on this board, NN.net (don’t know if it was true or not) that UNC-R had some public funding arrangement with the RBC center.

Also, if you read most of the comments, they are more supportive than negative.
Also, if you read most of the comments, they are more supportive than negative.
i thought so too. i was a little surprised at all the supportive comments.

we shook up the powers in the state a little when we joined cusa. i would expect nothing less if we try to start football.

That was a good thread. Funny that they would seem more supportive of the idea than our own administration…
