The Story on the Old SGA President

I was thinking back to the SGA President back in the late 90’s named Nick. There was some sort of scandal where he threatened the editor of the U Times and was kicked out of school. I think he transferred to State. Anyone remember the exact story about this and what ended up happening with this guy?

Nick Mirisis

 1. Got busted for cheating.
 2. U Times catches wind when someone finds out by looking at Nick’s former SGA computer.
 3. Nick isn’t too happy about it and threatens the U Times editor, including a picture of porn.
 4. Nick gets the boot and goes to NC State.

Yep, thats correct. He lived one dorm down from me in Poplar. Apparently, a couple years ago, he was helping someone in Kansas or Kentucky? run for house (campaign manager or something), and these old stories from charlotte surfaced and he had to quit.

Nick was a nice guy (to me), so I’ve got nothing against him personally, but dude did some serious shady stuff.

I would think he would be able to get a job with the Bush administration, sounds like he would fit right in…

I wouldn’t be surprised if this came up if he was a candidate, but I’m surprised anyone even knew his name if he worked in the back-office. I’m surprised it got found out the way it did. Someone in that district must have went to UNCC or something.

Luntz's deception Frank Luntz founded the Alexandria, VA-based, Luntz Research Companies, "the premier corporate and public affairs communications firm in Washington," in 1992. According to Dun and Bradstreet, he owns all 5,000 shares of the company. The D&B report said that as of May 24, 2004, Luntz was listed as President and someone named Nick Mirisis was listed as Vice President.

It appears that Mirisis was hired by Luntz despite having some well-worn skeletons in his closet. According to press reports, in 1999, Mirisis, the former Student Body President of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, copied a paper and turned it in as his own work in an English honors class. A few years later, he was forced to resign as the deputy campaign manager and congressional press secretary of Republican Kentucky congressman Ernie Fletcher’s campaign for governor when news of the plagiarizing incident was revealed.

“After the Charlotte campus newspaper revealed his academic fraud,” Louisville’s The Courier-Journal reported, “the newspaper’s editor, a former girlfriend of Mirisis, accused him of sending an e-mail that threatened her with sexual torture and death and had pornographic images attached.” An administrative board at the University suspended Mirisis for two years over the e-mail incident.

Frank Luntz

What a dumbass.

He makes Karl Rove look like a choir boy. I did a search engine on this guy and came across a Blog alledging that he also ran for office in KY under an assumed name as well. I can’t confirm the validity of the info, but if it’s true…what a piece of work.

He ran as Burbon county KY dog catcher under the assumed name of Bill Clinton.

Former student body president having trouble in Kentucky politics

Nicholas Mirisis’ past has stalled the former UNC Charlotte student body president’s political career. Mirisis served UNCC’s highest student-led post from 1998 to '99.

Mirisis recently resigned from his deputy campaign manager position for Ernie Fletcher, sixth district Kentucky congressman and candidate for governor, after headlines stemming from a 1999 national news scandal involving Mirisis resurfaced.

Al Cross of The Courier Journal in Louisville, reported last week that an anonymous tip to Fletcher’s campaign in late August was the first they had heard of Mirisis’ academic fraud violation and suspension from UNCC in 1999. Mirisis was hired to serve on the campaign in May 2002 without a background check.

When Mirisis’ term as president ended during the summer of 1999, his successor moved into his office and noticed several e-mail files were deleted from the computer’s hard drive.

Recovered documents from his e-mail account led to the discovery that Mirisis had purchased a research paper off the Internet and turned it in as his own. He received an ‘F’ in the course for plagiarism.

“It is something I am continuing to learn from and will learn from in the future,” he told The UTimes that summer.

Mirisis later resigned from his Association of Student Governments post, stating he wanted to focus on his academic pursuits as well as ensuring the “credibility and integrity” of the position.

Mirisis was suspended from UNCC on Sept. 1, 1999, but for reasons outside of academics.

An administrative board found him guilty of threatening The UTimes’ Editor in Chief, Jill McCartney, with sexual torture and death in an e-mail dated July 1, 1999.

She received the e-mail days after the original article about Mirisis’ dishonesty ran in The UTimes .

Mirisis soon enrolled at NC State University and later ended up as press secretary for Fletcher in 2002.

Mirisis has never admitted to threatening McCartney. Calls to Fletcher’s campaign were not returned.

“I was speechless then, and I still am to this day,” said Maurice Johnson, a UNCC alum who served as vice president under Mirisis. “I seriously thought ‘what in the world was Nick thinking.’”

Johnson had not spoken to Mirisis since the spring semester they were in office; he tried contacting Mirisis after hearing the news. Mirisis never returned his calls.

“That says a lot to this day, and still it makes me wonder about how we were as a team,” said Johnson. “I am definitely disappointed with Nick about it, and I would like to ask him, ‘What did you gain? What has this lesson taught you?’ And I hope he learned a lesson from it.”

Johnson said he was approached by people who knew of mistakes Mirisis had made prior to the election concerning his role in the SGA judicial branch.

Mirisis served the previous year as chief of student defense and chief justice of the Academic Integrity Board. The issue was never made public due to the secretive nature of the judicial branch, said Johnson. He did not disclose details because he didn’t want to start new rumors or dwell in the past.

“That let me know when I found out about it what I was getting myself into,” said Johnson.

With the Kentucky election falling on Nov. 4, Ted Arrington, chair and professor of the UNCC political science department, said voters will have time to forget the recent ripple concerning reports of Mirisis’ resignation.

“If you hire someone to help with your campaign and didn’t know everything about them, it’s not helpful but it’s no disaster,” said Arrington.

But if this mistake is a series of missteps taken by the ticket, Arrington said that’s another matter.

“The pattern can have impact on the vote but as one incident, its not likely to derail it,” he said.

Mirisis was the second member of Fletcher’s campaign to step down, according to the Courier-Journal, which reported Fletcher’s original running mate was ruled ineligible because he did not meet residency requirements.

Arrington said highly publicized misdeeds in college can be lived down, but it takes time.

“They need to be out in the rest of the world and make success somewhere else,” said Arrington. “It’s the recentness of it rather than anything else, but severity also plays a role.”

I bet Jill is making it a personal mission to go after this guy and expose him at every level. Wouldn’t be surprised if she was the anonymous tipster. Somebody is making this dude pay.

Does anyone know if Jill was hot???

I knew he threatened someone, but she was his former girlfriend?
While I don’t believe in violence, I also don’t believe in ex’s telling on each other. It has to be her hunting him down in KY & DC. She needs to get a life. If I was Mirisis, I’d have the B**ch arrested for stalking.

Stalking?

He cheated, lied about it, covered it up, then threatened to sexually torture a woman …

I’d also blow the whistle on him every chance I got. Good for her. Dude sounds like a douche.

I realize he did her wrong, but if he’s as bad as they say he is, you’d be better off not provoking him to come back again on you. Not to mention it’s not healthy to let your rage w/ someone control your life, & seeking to constantly get even.
