This Week in Baseball- Opening Weekend Edition

Glad to see us projected later this year, tho we can have a great season and have it slip away! (Stupid A-10).
My quick take on the new bat, is that as close as some of the competition is very good, I never thought it was fair to have collegiate (mainly) Div. 1 athletes having aluminum/composite bats. I think they dropped the ball with the ā€œdead batā€ they should have mandated wood honestly. I think this does switch college baseball focus back to baseball and not holding on a pitch until the wind blows. I think we will be ok, we dont have a true power guy this year, and our infield is solid, so we can play the small ball and defend it. Our outfield is awesome, and have the ability to cut of ropes. I was never a power hitter so just me personally I like the pop out of the bat, but I think it could have been done a little better, theyre going up there with a soaked log the way it sounds.

Hibbs alluded to this is the News14 interview with Solarte. I think the cost of wooden bats and having to replace them so frequently is prohibitive for most college programs. Not to mention, the idea with the new bats is safety based (ball with less inertia coming off the bat at such a high speed to protect pitchers). Granted wooden bats are dangerous for a different reason (splintering and careening when broken) but if the whole idea was safety then it seems illogical to go to a bat that is just as dangerous for different reasons.

I don’t think the new bat will be prohibitive for us. Like you said, we don’t have any huge hitters this year like Rivers was last year, and we are going to have to rely on small ball to get us around the bases this year. More exciting to watch, IMO. I love watching stolen bases and squeeze plays.

YES!!! the hit and run and double steal may not be something dug out as a ā€œtrickā€ play hahah, They could give em a wiffle bat and I think our guys would still scratch and fight it out. Just glad baseball is around to remove the semi-truck tire marks left from basketball season.

So the baseball news I heard was announced by Hibbs on News 14. So much for waiting until November. Lol why they told me not to say anything idk.

I had heard about the Ohio State series, but haven’t heard about playing Georgia Tech. I think the OSU was a 2 for 1 with 2 series here. I hope that GT is playing at the Hayes. If not, we will have to get another 49erfanatics.com bus trip to ATL for that weekend.

I believe it sets up for OSU in 2012 in Charlotte, at GT in 2012…Then at OSU, vs GT in 2013

Former 49ers ace and new Colorado Rockies pitcher John Maine to throw out the first pitch of the 2011 Charlotte baseball season tomorrow.

BUMP Today is Opening Day!!!
