I have seen several parts of different topics that talk about this year’s team verus last year and the future. I went to the game Sat night and notice several things that we should consider when we talk about this year’s team. I know several of you will have green tinted glasses on or will still think that we will win 20 games this year, but this is just my opinion.
-Very little depth on this team. Even if you add Spears, KJ, and Dew, we are still short on depth.
-Very small overall. Deuce seems to be playing well, but he will get beat-up like our pg from last year once we get to conference play. Green is a small 2 guard as well.
-Lutz did not recruit well over the last few years. We are not very athletic either.
-I think we are already seeing Major recruit bigger and more athletic players based on our recruiting class this year. I think we will see more over the next few years.
-I think Major could do a good job as Niner coach. Sat was the first game in several years that I have actually seen our players execute a game plan. Spears is a lost as a player with some size and talent, but I think as a coach you must make sure that it is your way or the highway. Spears will either get with the program or we will not see him again.
-This is going to be a long year, but I think if we can get at least 1-2 more recruits for next year that we will start seeing great improvement for the Niner program.
Yup - that was a knock on Lutz - he went from recruiting players - to athletes - to guys who could do one thing well.[/quote]
There’s a common theme there… incomplete players. We rarely got them in CUSA, and stopped once we switched to the A10. Whatever the reason - laziness, bad coaching, the conference, the assistants, it happened.
Who is the last near complete player we’ve had?
We’ve got to get a few and get some guys with fewer holes in their games (or size and athleticism) to compete with.
Way off base. As PB said, he’s logged more NBA time for a reason. There’s also a reason that Eddie’s jersey is hanging up in Halton and Curtis’ isn’t.
And Curtis would be the first one OFF of that list if you ask me. Why? Because he was incredible as a Frosh/Soph, slipped a little on his work ethic and looked sloppier as a Jr., and threw away his chances @ the NBA as a Senior because he wouldn’t put the work in.
He did win C-USA player of the year in 2005. He was also back to back defensive player of the year and was the national defensive player of the year in 2005.
