He’s a 2006 non-qualifier prepping at Patterson this year. Baines had committed to CofC, but with his recruitment re-opened, apparently Lutz & Co. are interested according to this from Bob Gibbons:
The Patterson School Prep team is led by returning starters: muscular 6-5 guard/forward Dominique Sutton, a Durham, NC, resident being recruited by N.C. State, Oklahoma, Virginia Tech, Kansas State, and others; 6-6 forward Tirrell Baines, Laurens, SC, who committed last year to College of Charleston, but is now being recruited by Auburn, Charlotte, Charleston, and others; 6-5 guard/forward Jeremy Hazel, Bronx, NY, now committed to Seton Hall; and 6-1 point guard Chris Poelnitz, Toledo, OH, who is being heavily recruited by Appalachian State.
From Rivals at the Reebok Big Time tourney in Las Vegas back in July:
Tirrell Baines's commitment and de-commitment to College of Charleston went way below the radar last school year. His future commitment won't do the same. The prep school bound wing could very well be a guy that makes some noise come winter time. He made plenty of noise on Monday morning for New York Elite.
Baines scored 31 points and pulled nine rebounds in a 77-63 win against the Dallas Mustangs Again squad. The athletic 6-foot-6 wing shined in the transition game and had things going for him in the midrange game. The South Carolina native will spend a post grad year at Patterson (N.C.), where he played last year, and should very well catch on with a high-major program. He has that kind of talent.
BTW, RWORKMAN09, if you’ll look at the Scout site again, that info is out of date. The verbal to CofC was invalidated when he didn’t qualify. He’s a 3-star on Rivals.
…We also find when we dig a little deeper that 6’7 Jeff Allen from Chatham (Hargrave Military) VA, 6’6 Jermaine Peterson from Fitchburg (Notre Dame) MA, 6’5 Zach Payton from Laurinburg (Institute) NC, 6’1 Malcolm Grant from Winchendon (School) MA, and 6’7 Darrington Hobson from Decatur (Christian) IL are good enough to be ranked in the 30-70 range nationally in the senior class and 6’4 P. Allen Stinnett from Wolfeboro (Brewster Academy) MA, 6’4 Thomas Manzano from Fitchburg (Notre Dame) MA, 6’6 Kenyan Harmon from Lenoir (Patterson School) NC, 6’8 Kodi Augustus from Lee (Academy) ME, 6’5 Terrence Rodrick from Philadelphia (Rise Academy) PA, 6’6 Tirrell Baines from Lenoir (Patterson School) NC, 6’5 Earl Pettis from Lenoir (Patterson School) NC, and 6’8 Justin Burrell from North Bridgton (Bridgton Academy) ME all would be the equivalent of a top 100 senior nationally. In other words, once again the prep school ranks promise to be loaded, as already there are 17 players who will be worth four points or more when they commit to a four-year Division I college or university.

“who was #30 on patterson? he is probably 6’7” or 6’8". I saw him get about a foot and a half above the rim when he was coming down the middle of the lane and slam it."
Quote from someone that saw Patterson play in Greensboro over the weekend.
I figured Baines would be going to CofC still, because there is no doubt Cremins wanted to keep this guy badly. With the coaching experience/recruiting talent Cremins has, I wouldn’t too surprised by the announcement.
i have been to oxford, MS numerous times, that place cares about its basketball team light years less than the city of charlotte cares about ours, and 99% of the city has some affliation to the school
