U-Mass Pregame!

A win here would be great. U-Mass is surging but they have not beaten any one good or that we have not (Davidson). I would have said they only difference is they have not dropped a game that they should have won. Then the played The Sally. So who knows at this point. I am not sure if we will win but I would not rule it out. GO NINERS! LETS DO THIS!

Anyone have line on this game?

Could I post this picture under the Pole Vault thread? :D
I’ve seen these guys play a couple times this season.

They are athletic and play up-tempo/high pressure kind of style. This kind of team has been a problem this season when officiating allows for fast physical play.

This team is not a very good shooting team. College of Charleston (Southern Conference) beat them on a neutral court by 20+ by playing a lof of zone. Coach Major rarely will play zone, no matter how athletic the other team is, so that could be an issue if their athleticism gets them better shots.

We can definitely win this, because I have seen them get spanked, but I have also seen them in spurts where they create turnovers and lots of points quickly.

We played some zone versus Richmond, so I wouldn’t be shocked to see us throw some zone looks at UMass.

I watched some of their 2nd half against LaSalle (yes that game was on TV). They were down 25 at half, cut the lead down to 5 late in the game, but just couldn’t overcome such a large margin.

They have had similar results against 3 common opponents: Beat EZU 63-58 at Minges, Lost at Miami 75-83, and beat Davidson at home 73-65.

I know M2M is Major’s preferred defense, but I’m surprised we haven’t seen more zone this year. We used it a lot last year to some success, just didn’t have any offense to match it.

I think we would have success this year playing a zone with Thorne, Braz and JB across the back line.

You just want Thorne in b/c he’s big- size king…

I’m really excited about this game. We match up well with Umass, and we proved last Saturday that we can keep our coposure and win on the road. Pierria is going to make their pg’s life miserable tomorrow night. Get it done Niners! 3-0 to start off A10 play would be really sweet.

Having Thorne or Braz on a wing in a 2-3 zone would not work. They lack the quickness to recover and get out on the wings to defend. That side of the zone would be abused the entire time.

Thorne center, Braz low block left or right. Have the 1,2,3 cover the wings in a matchup 2-3 zone.

It would work and has worked extremely well stopping penetration.

Slowing down the game and forcing teams to shoot over top of your defense.

All things that need to be done to keep UMASS from scoring in the 70’s

I don’t think that CoC loss is a big deal. Twas a blowout but not a bad loss. They were cold and Charleston was hot. And it’s not as if we’re a great shooting team, not to say a good shooting night would hurt. I’d like to think better D will win the game, easy baskets, Bojangles hustle stats.
Maybe they’re partially creeped-out by Southerners. ? Nah.

That gives me an idea. Can we change our ā€˜Three-o-Meter’ in Halton to a ā€˜Bojangles Hustle Stats’ Board. I miss that from the Hive.

Watch us start killing it in A10 play. Then, what everyone wants will happen… conference shuffle. We’ll end up in another conference and everything Major is [hopefully] developing to play a10 style will be out the window.
