UNCC again? Wake up WS Journal!

Those guys must enjoy doing this on the regular.

The university administration doesn’t even like to be referred to as UNCC anymore.

Would it help if some one actually attached to the University contacted them? Get on that.

Kevin…Yes, I do believe it would help if SID got a hold of those guys at the WS Journal. Wake apologists at WS Journal anyway. They have their little bit of fun by referring to us as, UNC Charlotte and UNCC. How sad.

From W-S Journal for what it’s worth:

"Great hearing from you.

Your e-mail is the second I’ve received on this topic. My response to you is the same as to the first person good enough to write.
Our newspaper’s style is to refer to the school as UNC Charlotte. The decision was made by those with higher pay ranks than mine. As it has been explained to me, if the school itself is UNC Charlotte, then its athletics teams are to be referred to as UNC Charlotte – regardless of what a specific department of that school prefers. I’ve also been told it’s confusing to readers too busy, or perhaps too dense, to distinguish the Charlotte 49ers from the Charlotte Bobcats.

Thanks for reading.

Dan"

I suppose a reader would have to be supremely dense to think that the Bobcats just played Wake Forest.

So, basically he just called his audience dumba$$es.

I wonder what the paper calls Virginia Tech?

Hint: It’s not Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University

Until a new editor or someone who is higher than Dan comes aboard…it will be UNCC. I live in Forsyth and figured today’s headline would be UNCC beats Wake. (It wasn’t) The WSJ is actually pretty good to us…we usually get a bigger than normal preview in the CBB section every year and they run stories on us here and there. You know kind of like the Obeserver.

Well then someone should email that dude back with the above information and ask why the double standard.

It’s not effing preference, go to our website, asshole. What an idiot.

As much as I’d like to be critical of media outlets for not using the proper name for the program, I can’t. Why you might ask, because the 49ers represent the university and not the city (we do but they won’t believe it, so I won’t argue the point).

Folks, whats the university’s name?

The University of North Carolina at Charlotte

We look as silly as Prince did when he changed his name to “the Artist”, and at least he went through the trouble to legally change his name (I think)?

As long as this university keeps this name why should anyone take our sports programs’ name change request seriously?

Disagree with you…his name change was a stroke of genious. Record company won’t let him out of a contract, he changes his name to a symbol so that he will not be held to the contract. That was around the time he sold his music on his website for pure profit.

But that doesn’t apply to us. We’re obscure to most of the nation, so what do we do? We create some type of split personality disorder where the University wants to go by one name and the athletic department goes by another.

Yes but at the time everyone was saying “WTF Prince, you’re Prince”. He wound up looking smart after a few years but that won’t happen for us.

If the Charlotte Bobcats wanted to change their name to the Carolina Bobcats, the whole organization would change its name. You wouldn’t have Bob Johnson running around saying “I own Charlotte Bobcats Arena where the Carolina Bobcats play”. He’d look like an ass and so does our university’s administrators. Like everything else they attenpt they do it on the cheap and it falls flat. As bad as I want football I can easily see it done on the cheap and sucking ass forever under the folks in charge now.

They should have went in and done name change surgery (the whole U) and not just slap a bandaide on it and say “be careful walking on that for a while”.

Smart or not, he made millions because of it.

As for our precarious situation, I think you and I agree that the University is the epitamy of UNsmart for allowing this name confusion to persist by not changing names.

I think tounge is planted in cheek a bit. I bet they have fun with it. Charlotte fans (AKA us) have a reputation of whining about getting more respect. Sometimes we deserve the rep, and sometimes its just a gross generalization. The athletics department name change might be considered the same sentiment.

VA49er, good point about VPISU.

I agree that we should have done a complete name change and not just the athletics, however why do we seem to be the only team they have this stance with? Va Tech and UNCCH don’t seem to apply to the same rule. It’s just the Journal trying to “put us back in our place”.

These institutions have been called Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech and Carolina for DECADES if not CENTURIES, we don’t have that long to effect a change in preception, and we deffinately don’t have time to screw it up like we have so far.

The name of the school is UNCC.

Ass Hole, CPA
Class of '74

Actually, Cliff, the University no longer allows for UNCC to be an officially-recognized abbreviation.

Does the WS Journal list University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill or UNC-CH as the abbreviation for North Carolina?

Someone should gently point out to the editor that, regardless of what he’s heard, it’s not a department preference at that school. The school administration actually made the decision to brand the athletics teams as Charlotte. Refer to the athletics trademarks on file with the government.

But if we’re going by that, so is NC Central University. Their athletic teams are referred to as UNCC. Just another bit of confusion and chaos that would be solved by dropping the UNC from our name.
