USA Today season assessment

First paragraph and especially second sentence pretty much sums it up.

USAToday.com: Atlantic 10 Conference

Now if they would just spell Ian’s last name right!

Kind of surpised they didn’t mention Spears anywhere in there. However they did mention Braswell.

“The team struggled shooting the basketball all season long, making just 41 percent from the field, which placed the 49ers 13th in the A-10. That included a 31 percent effort on 3-pointers, also 13th-best in the conference. The inaccuracy from long range didn’t stop the 49ers from launching, however, as they took more 3-pointers (707) than all but two teams in the A-10 (Massachusetts and Duquesne).”

We got plenty of good shots and FTs. We just didn’t make enough. Other than that, I’m satisfied with effort, motivation, heart, attitude, and yes, even coaching. This team could have imploded early on, but didn’t. They battled hard, kept the faith, maintained good attitude, and hung together as a team. WE JUST NEED MORE TALENT AND PLAYERS THAT CAN HIT THEIR SHOTS WHEN THEY GET THEM.

That was a good read, thanks for posting the link.
The highly touted 6-foot-8 forward had offers from many big-name programs, including Indiana, but chose the 49ers.
I think that’s a complement, but what a poor implication.

That was a good read, thanks for posting the link.
no kidding, thats better than any post season piece from our LOCAL paper
no kidding, thats better than any post season piece from our REGIONAL paper

Fixed that for you.

no kidding, thats better than any post season piece from our LOCAL paper

i can’t decide if that is a sadder statement for the observer or for the university.

How true now that the Big O is not the paper of record for the ACC, the SEC, and all things Davidson/Curry, but the Big East as well after that big write-up they published on the BE championship game!

“Could have imploded early on but didn’t”…What do you call opening the season 1-6? What do you call 11-20?..What do you call 0-9 on road in conference?..Just curious…And if you’re pleased with the coaching your in for a few more years of the same so you shoud have a lot to look forward to.

I’m talking about chemistry and attitude. Yes, the W-L columns sucked, but the guys kept trying and didn’t point fingers or fight each other. As for the coaching, if Bobby had gotten better talent (SHOOTERS!!!) we would not be having this conversation. It’s poor recruiting, not bad coaching in my opinion. When we had real talent, Bobby was a genius! (Remember the Bobby Lutz Invitationals?) Our problem is lack of TALENT IN SHOOTING THE BALL FROM ANYWHERE.

Our problem was not enough shooters? Really? Then why did Lutz run offense focused on taking contested jumpers and flinging 3s (36 in ONE GAME)?

All Lutz’ offense is is shooting. no driving, no movement, no back door screens. Rotating the ball and chucking 3s.

I’m seriously laughing that you think Lutz was ever a genius. “Hey, wait, we can get THREE points!” BRILLIANT!

49er1, we didn’t find out this season if we had a shooter because Bowden was lost prior to the start of the season. Not that I would have expected him to be our go-to-guy based on what he did in Toronto over Labor Day, but sure would have been nice to have had him on the court. Ditto for some unshaven surfer dude who thought the starting PG spot was his God-given right. Heck, I would just like to have a season without injuries or defections!

Yes, really!

Haven’t followed the Niners long, have you?..

So is Phil on track to get that 5th year of eligibility?
no kidding, thats better than any post season piece from our LOCAL paper
Sad part of this post is that it was a very topline item that didn’t mention Spears or Bowden, both of whom I think will start next year and it’s still more in-depth than anything the “Regional Rag” has publihed all year.

Hey, I think I just renamed the O- The Regional Rag.

Yes, really!

Haven’t followed the Niners long, have you?..

…I’ve seen 5 seasons and been to a good 90% of home games. I was here for Eddie’s last season, the DeAngelo show, the end of the “Hey Lee, Chuck a Three” era (where we’d lose if he didnt put up 25), and now this cf of a season.

Good try though.

Also, what is Ian if not a shooter? And if Lamont isn’t a good shooter, why does he shoot so damn much? There are a lot of schools smaller than us with less talent that win because their coaches knows how to work with what they have. Your argument doesn’t work. If we don’t have good shooters, why is our offense predicated on 3s?

Ditto for some unshaven surfer dude who thought the starting PG spot was his God-given right.
Are you talking about the player that went back to Southern California so he can be closer to more NBA Scouts?

CharlotteAlum08: No where did I say “not enough shooters”. I said and meant GOOD TALENTED shooters. And I’ve followed the NINERS since 1971-72 season. What else ya got?

From another thread:

RE: USA Today College Basketball Preview Projects Niners Finish 9th

I bought it, but I don’t know where I put it. I think it’s by my fireplace so I can use it to get the fire started.

That should tell you all you need to know about its “basketball experts” The analysis was so bad, I considered writing to USA Today to demand my $4.95 back.

I was pretty angry that USA Today predicted that we would finish ninth in the conference. FWIW, they also predicted that Xavier, Dayton, & Temple would get NCAA berths.
