F#!k that. All the more proof that that not officially branding ourselves “Charlotte” (as a university) is hurting the image of the school. Other schools recognize it, and they pounce on the opportunity to brand themselves with Charlotte.
E-Mail to Judy: I hear there is a new billboard in town that says Charlotte, with the C being the South Carolina logo. Are we doing something to protect our turf?
E-Mail to Phil: I hear there is a new billboard in town that says Charlotte, & the C is the South Carolina Gamecock symbol. What are we doing to defend our town? This is what happens when we don’t even stop North Carolina-Chapel Hill from taking our Med School in our backyard. Other schools start to think we bend over for everyone.
Looks like they pulled this stunt back in October 2007 in Chapel Hill, too…
WEEKEND ITEMS - October 12, 2007
The Gamecock Nation is making an impact in the Old North State this weekend. Along with our football team, scores of Gamecock faithful will be making their way to Chapel Hill for the South Carolina - North Carolina battle for the border on Saturday afternoon. And welcoming them to Chapel Hill will be these billboards:
The billboards have been placed on I-77 south of exit 7, north bound and I-85 north bound.
Important point: http://www.lamar.com owns the sign At the end of the day, it’s between University of South Carolina at Columbia and Lamar whether a sign goes there or not. Especially considering they are a public school in another state I’m not sure what tools we have other than making sure they never, ever open a satellite campus in our fair city.
Did you know we have a logo based on the letter C as well? Carolina begins with a C and there are other cities in ‘Carolina’ that have billboards we can purchase.

You’re absolutely right. There is no way to stop this, nor should there be. I commend USC for doing something to draw attention to themselves and give there fans something to get fired up about on their way into town. In fact, I’d say that’s how big time programs do it, woman.
The best/most hilarious move ever would be if we put up a c-pick CHARLOTTE sign up on the NEXT billboard that something like “we appreciate authenticity”
I’m not sure why people are getting pissed about this. They are playing a game in Charlotte and have a ton of alumni in the city (as well as ECU) so I commend them for organizing a series and being willing to play away from home one Saturday.
I’m not pissed at SC at all. I just hang my head for our school. Much like the 2 App billboards I’ve seen within 20 miles of campus. It sucks seeing other teams ________ (insert whatever here) in our town, but it is what it is. It’s a big City that nobody is actively trying to claim.
Much like the lack of merchandise I see in Charlotte, the same goes for the billboard. I’m pissed that it is not Charlotte that I see.
But whatever, we’ve had the same status quo for 20+ years leading, branding, marketing us so what the hell.
I’ll be there, with my Grandfather (USC Alum) cheering for the Gamecocks, but this is gives the “Stake Your Claim” campaign a BIG FAT F. Credit to USC’s marketing department.

Except South Carolina actually IS “Carolina” and was the first to be “Carolina.” This incident is just a slap in the face, tho I’m thinking it is actually an ad about some campus they are going to have in Charlotte opening Sept 3rd?
