W-S Journal "Much is expected of Lutz, 49ers"

DeLong goes through the motions in a piece he cut and pasted from press conference summaries

It’s pretty boring and uninspired writing. Hack job.

I thought their Western Carolina, Elon, ECU, and High Point U. articles had more depth. That’s sorry…

The city of Winston-Salem is NOT Niner-friendly. I know for a fact that twice when we were in the C-USA tourney finals (in that all so great Saturday 11:30 am slot), the game wasn’t shown anywhere in town. Not on cable, satellite, at a bar, a restaurant…nothing. Despite having a pretty substantial number of alumni in W-S, they don’t show much Niner love.

No one is going to show the C-USA championship in the Triad when it’s held on CBS at the same time the ACC semi-finals are beginning. WFMY shows few Saturday NCAA contests, unless an ACC is particiating.

The W-S Journal’s favorite school other than Wake is App State.

The CBS affiliate here, WBTV does NOT show the CUSA Championship either (acc you know), but they do help arrange for another cable channel to show it. At least.

I would actually disagree with that and say that Winston-Salem State gets by far the most coverage in the Journal. It absolutely amazes me how much coverage the get. How much coverage does JC Smith get from the Observer??? In my day it wasn’t a whole lot…

I believe that Winston-Salem has the second most Charlotte alumni, second only to Charlotte.

I was referring to out of town schools Jimmy. The Journal staffed the App State-Hawaii game last season in Hawaii. They do give the Rams good coverage.

It's a blast! Try it.

I wouldn’t miss Memphis for the world this year.

Might just have to road trip this one this year!

Wake folks – of the SID type – would scoff at that. They see themselves in the paper as second-class citizens to, drum roll please, UNC.

Why bring it up Mike? With that comment, you’ve just proven the long debated point about a hometown newspaper not supporting the local team.

Wake is the second smallest Division I school in the US, and its few alumni are spread out all over the country. They aren’t living in Forsyth County for sure or they would own the W-S Journal.

Would you have staffed a football game in Hawaii for any team in the Charlotte region (use any parameter you choose) other than the Panthers, even a bowl game? They did.

As someone who grew up in Winston, while the journal’s coverage of Wake Forest has improved, I would definently argue that the Journal doesn’t cover Wake Forest fairly.

Things might have changed. They do a fairly good job on Wake nowadays.

Thus why I said it has improved. :stuck_out_tongue:

So noted.

I lived in Winston-Salem most of my life & still spend a lot of time there.

The Journal used to be tarhole crazy but in recent years has given Wake a lot of press. BTW, concerning App, App State has tons of alumni in the Triad & the Journal focuses on northwest NC as well.

Can’t speak for W-S Journal but here in Greensboro the News and Record doesn’t say anything about the Niners. They don’t say much about the hometown UNCG Spartans or A+T Aggies for basketball either. Course both those teams suck, and Greensboro is the headquarters of the ACC.

But I lost all respect for the News and Record when their editorial page editor, Allen Johnson, refused to interview 33.3% of the balloted candidates in their political endorsement considerations. But that’s a whole nother story.

I’ve given up on papers. I’m just getting my info online from now on. It’s the only medium that isn’t corrupt and biased.

Trust me. The sports editor of the GBO paper had better be damn glad that I don't live in Greensboro. B) B) B)

Actually, I am very much aware of that situation. I have quite a few close friends in Greensboro. It’s about the most tarhole friendliest city I’ve ever seen. They don’t give Wake that much coverage either.
