What sport touts most 49er Alum's?

Just read a story on the Alumni page. It wasn’t stated there but I think that it shows that a sport outside of our Athletic Department has more alums competing in a professional sport. NASCAR has 55 alumni working on NEXTEL and Busch Series. Those are alumni from our NC Motorsports and Automotive Research Center program. This article tells just how much Hendrick has focused on UNCC grads is exciting for this program. Hendrick has been as close to dominate this year as could be in NASCAR. Judging by the number of NASCAR related threads on NNN, I don’t expect this to be the most popular thread of the year, but I thought you all would never-the-less find it interesting.

we have never capitalized on Nascar for a school so close to all the teams in proximity. I think its very smart to have the motorsports program or degree…whatever it is we offer now. We just have never had success cultivating a relationship with Nascar. Hopefully as the kids we harvest into Nascar, the fruits of labor come back to us in a decade or so, as those grads develop relationships that help UNCC eventually. Bruton Smith fooball stadium sounds awfully good to me.

I believe Travis Gordon, one of my all time favorite walkons, has a job with one of the NASCAR teams. CMack could probably give more details about that.

Yes, Travis works for Hendrick.

People in NASCAR have college degrees?

Given the way things typically seem to happen, I’m waiting for the report that says Mac Everett HAD a stadium naming rights deal in place for Bobby Ginn Stadium.

Wonder if Paul Newman is a football fan?

Sure, NASCAR is an expensive business, but I still think there is some kind of missed marketing opportunity between the school’s athletics and NASCAR.

i am shocked its only 55

The guys in the garage and behind the walls typically do. I found out that a lot of pit crew members are former 2nd and 3rd string pro athletes.

According to the article most of the students have internships with the racing teams also. And it says that there are 65 current students, so there probably are more that actually work with them. I wouldn’t think that they would include interns in their numbers.

Metro, I remember the time I met with a then-Charlotte Motor Speedway senior management-level employee. He confided that when Smith walked into a room, everyone checked to make sure they still had their wallets! Of course, when Smith’s ex-wife left the courthouse after their divorce settlement in 1994, she got more than $19 million from ol’ Bruton!
