Whats the difference?

I have always been a supporter of a name change to the University of Charlotte for our school. While watching the game tonight I realized that there are great schools that are named in the same we are…It seems that their name doesn’t seem to hurt them…

The University of California Los Angeles- 11 National Titles in Mens Basketball

California State Fullerton- Believe they won a college world series a year or so ago

Pretty much all the schools in California…

I’ve lived out here in California for over a year now and i’ve never heard any of these schools complain about there name. You don’t here UCLA getting upset at berkly for calling themselfs “California”…

But you would hear UCLA supporters getting upset if they heard or read that “California” made it to the national championship game this year.

You would hear Cal State Fulerton supporters getting upset if they had to read/hear about “California” winning the national baseball championship 2 or 3 years ago.

Differences between UCLA and UNCC

UCLA has 11 national titles
UCLA is located Los Angelos the second largest city in the USA
Cal doesn’t have a great athletics tradition
UCLA has existed over 100 years
UCLA has football, and a good team
UCLA plays in a BCS conference

Tis True… my point is that their name didn’t keep them from doing great things …especially when you look at Fullerton… That is a school very similar to UNCC… Looked at in Cali more as a commuter school…and its a Cal State rather than “The University Of California”

I Just don’t think a name change is going to bring a sudden sense of Identity to our school. Its something that like Jaminniner said takes time and tradition…

UCLA doesnt sound like a community college

UCLA already has their own brand-name recognition. They aren’t confused with any of the other Cals.

We are lost in the shuffle with all of the other UNCs.

It would not hurt if we set the world on fire with 20+ years of academic/research and athletic success on the national stage. Our “brand-name” would evolve and sustain naturally and not have to rely on some PR campaign that goes nowhere without real pub about real accomplishments and success on a national and international scale. Past PR projects such as “I lost my hyphen at UNCC” and the athletic teams being called the “Charlotte” 49’ers are fine to do, but without other pub BASED IN SUBSTANCE and seen/heard beyond Mecklenburg County, the confusion will continue, I’m afraid.

UCLA has never been listed on ESPN’s bottom line as:

“CA-Los Angeles” or “CA-LA”

Thank god our Athletic Deptartment put a stop to that crap.

EXACTLY

I was initially against us changing our name but have grown to like it. The only problem I see is the confusion with the Bobcats. I never liked the hyphen! The school that has done the best marketing job with their bad name is IUPUI.

another school… UNLV…

I think niner007 has a good point. Those schools at a point were probably like us, struggling for find their own unique nitch of the world.

I think the name association comes more from being in the national spotlight, rather then having a unique name or something of that sort.

If you think about it, if we go on to have a top 25 program some time down the road, people won’t us for chapel hill.

thats my pov, but I think it has substance right?

UWSP, baby.
TAMUCC or bust!
Look out for those juggernauts, UMBC.
UNR, UNR, UNR, UNR!

Put your hand in the bag for Scrabble, pull out three or four letters, and odds are you have the abbreviation for a lame school or at least one without a clear identity.

I suppose I can relate to the name thing on another level than most. I grew up with the same name as my father…but being a “Jr.”. I hated it when I was younger…always being confused with my dad and struggling to be my own man. I guess I’ve realized in life that its not your name but what you make of it.

My point of the whole thread is that maybe we should focus our energy on building traditions and making our school a better place…adding a law school…etc… than worrying about people not know who we are. If we make a big enough impression on people the confusion will cease. We are at a disadvantage in the short term becuase of Chapel Hills history… but we can catch up. Our University has grown enormously in the last few years!

Quoted for truth.
The difference between UNC and UNCC is far too subtle for most people to grasp, unlike UCLA vs. Cal.

Example: when I was a student, the X-games tour came to campus and the MC said “It is a beautiful day here at UNC” The guy was standing on our campus and didn’t even know where he was.

They missed the exit to Chapel Hill and had to stop somewhere that day.

another school... UNLV..

But UN is known as Nevada, it’s not as confusing. As stated North Carolina is often referred to as UNC so it’s easy for people to mistake “UNC” and “UNCC”
