The athletic teams of University of North Texas (they haven’t been North Texas State U. since 1988!) are known as the Mean Green (with the mascot being an eagle), so there will be green everywhere on the court Sunday! BTW, as some of us old-timers recall, the Niners used to also be referred to – unofficially – as the Mean Green as well.

49er Trivia for today: Who began using the Mean Green term for the 49ers and what season was it first used?
This should be a team that we handle well, but they have two players that were transfers from Arkansas and Arizona State. Kendrick Davis averaged 16.8 ppg last season as a junior. He played his first two seasons for the Razorbacks. They also have Keith Wooden, a Top 100 player out of high school that is eligible this season after transferring from Arizona State. He didn’t do much to impress at ASU, but he’s big at 6’9, 245. The only thing that worries me about our game with them is the timing. Hopefully we will not have a hangover, win or lose, after playing Hofstra.
My biggest concern about UNT is how will we respond if we lose to Hofstra the day before. This could have all the makings of that darned ESPN Holiday round-robin tourney when we lost to Colorado and ULL a few years back!
I would like to make a motion they any references to this particular event, in addition to the Hal Wissel era, be removed from the historical records of Charlotte 49ers athletics…or, at least, be banned from this site.
My guess is 1976, when we first made some noise on the National scene in the NIT. I was 2.
Close enough X. It was before the 75-76 season. Mike Pratt came up with the name.
