Worth reading, in light of basketball & football situations

In depth story about the funds (or lack of) funds coming in at UNC Wilmington in today’s Wilmington Star-News. It’s worth noting that in 2002, they had more members than the 49er Club has. They were close to $2 million raised then, that number has just been hit in Charlotte and it’s going to take double that with football.

Donors abandon Seahawks after basketball team’s steep decline, Wilmington Star-News

While I don’t doubt that there are problems with the basketball team that contribute to their fundraising difficulties, it’s a little strange the author didn’t even mention that the period he’s using to document declines in donations and club members spans one of the worst financial meltdowns in a long time. Seems like a caveat worth mentioning, but maybe he assumes the reader will automatically take that into account (I wouldn’t assume that).

If I didn’t know better I’d think the Star News actually cares about their local University. Surely in North Carolina that is not the case. Perhaps they need someone from the O to show them how to run a proper TarHole loving sports page.

UNCW is pretty loved in Wilmington, but everyone is still UNCCH/Duke fans first.

Maybe we should embrace fans like that.

Wilmington always gets excited when UNCW is playing well, they have good support. But you’re right, that support fades when things aren’t going well because everybody there roots for CH or Duke as well.
