1/25/2016 Freshman of the Week - Jon Davis

I saw this in the Shoutbox, but it merits a thread.

FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK JON DAVIS, CHARLOTTE Freshman, 6-2, G, Upper Marlboro, Maryland Davis averaged a team-leading 22.0 points per game last week in a pair of 49er victories. He scored 21 points on 8-for-10 shooting from the field to go along with a season-high-tying seven assists and a season-high tying six rebounds to hand then-Conference USA co-leader Marshall its first loss of the season Thursday. Davis followed up that performance with a game-high 23 points, including going 9-for-12 from the field and 4-for-6 from beyond the three-point line in the 49ers victory over WKU Saturday. He also had six assists with two steals in the WKU game. For the week, he shot 17-22 (.773) from the field and averaged 6.5 assists and 4.5 rebounds per game. The freshman guard played 72 minutes as the 49ers primary ball handler, and he had 13 assists with only four turnovers during that span. In C-USA play, he averages a team-leading 16.4 points per game to go along with 3.0 rebounds and 5.4 assists per game. This is his second career C-USA Freshman of the Week accolade.

I went back and looked at the Freshman of the Year winner from last year–Torin Dorn. It is hard to believe, but his stats probably wouldn’t do it this year, maybe not even best on our team.

Dorn was selected as the C-USA Freshman of the Year as the 49ers leading scorer. He was also the top freshman scorer in Conference USA, averaging 11.8 points per game through the regular season and was a three-time C-USA Freshman of the Week selection. Dorn registered his first career double-double Jan. 8 with 26 points and 10 rebounds against WKU.

Three out of four weeks is not bad. Should have been 4 for 4 with Scott last week.

Scott averaging 13.6 ppg in conference.
White averaging 14.7 ppg in conference.
Davis averaging 16.4 ppg in conference.

I was planning to look at their conference numbers also. Thanks for beating me to it.

If our guys keep playing like this, we realistically deserve 3 guys on the all freshman list at the end of the year. We won’t get it, but they’ll all deserve it.

Do you think Price and Co. can recruit talent and then teach these guys up? Wow

His assist to turnover ratio is really good. I don’t really know any of the other 13 rosters in the league, but I have feeling he could be ROTY.

Right now I’d still say Evans from Rice is the ROY, but if Davis keeps playing like this, who knows.

Jon Davis is a beast. So proud. And yeah, I like our Ast/TO ratio.

We are going to play Rice twice before the end of the season, so that gives Davis a chance to make his case on the floor.

Evans currently has four Freshman of the week honors. Would like to see one of our guys best that.

I would rather have three guys with four each, than one guy with six.

Truth. Team > individual. Because we have 3 talented freshman they’re cannibalizing each other’s ability to win. That’s good for the team.

Agree. If we lost two guards we may have one of ours averaging 20+. Marcus Evans is currently at 19.6 pts. per game, 4.1 rebounds and 3.1 assists

I would rather have any 3 of these current freshman before I would want Woods, it may be coaching that is making them better, but they all seem to want it more and pout less.

I told the guy sitting next to me at the game last week that I do not think Woods gets much playing time at Wake. I do not mean any bad, but I just felt he was a situation player to shoot, but had trouble with the ball and defense.
