2007/08 OOC schedule...

nvm
Man, the only thing worse than being cincinatti in the big east right now was being william and mary in the socon in the roaring 20ā€™s. I know it was all pasty guys and the center was tall at 6ā€™5" but still, UNC, NCSU, Duke, Florida, Tenn, Alabama, Vanderbilt, GW, Maryland, Virginia, VT, put these teams in a conference together and i guaruntee that even the best pac 10 team couldnā€™t get to .500, 23 skiddo!
But the landscape of college basketball was different then. W & M may have been the team to beat in the conference for some of those years. Many solid programs from that era are no longer that great today. Even San Francisco has 2 national titles. Back then, small private schools had a fairer chance to compete and there were fewer large public schools.

yes i realize the golden days of the san fran dons and all the wonder and glory of a george mikan, 6-10 man with glasses tearing up the floor. I was simply referring to what a ridiculous conference that would be today, at least 10 ncaa bids, hence that is why i said the players would be all pasty, it was segregated in the 20ā€™s, and the center would be a towering 6ā€™5" on average. Hell larry miller, star forward for the heels in the 60ā€™s was 6ā€™3".

Sorry to contribute to the hijacking of this thread, but back to the Southern Conference, hereā€™s a snapshot of the conference in 1929:
Anyone old enough to clarify?
lol I dont think we have too many 80+ year old posters

Each team plays three games in three days next November at the University of the Virgin Islands Sports and Fitness Center on St. Thomas.
I hope St. Thomas has a casino.

my grandfather graduated from davidson, so my father knew a lot about what was going on there - and a few months ago when we had our davidson game he was talking about how great they used to be. Apparently davidson ran real strong back in the day - and he mentioned the ACC when he was talking to me about it, so i believe those ā€œrumorsā€ are true.

Good point. I guess the conference systems meant something different than it does now.

University of the South (D-III) and Washington and Lee (D-II or III) have sure slipped.

As I posted recently, the A-10 is going to re-visit the ā€œ3-school partnerā€ scheme, so the Charlotte home-and-away versus Dayton, GW, and Richmond will change.
Elaborate please or direct me to another thread where this was discussed alreadyā€¦

I hope we keep home and home vs. GW. I think it would be a mistake to rotate the home and away seriesā€™ to different teams. I think we have a little bit of a rivalry going with those three schools.

EDIT:
NEW PARTNERS - Since expanding to 14 teams last year, each Atlantic 10 team plays 10 schools once and three twice during the regular season. Which teams meet twice has been somewhat determined by rivalries and geographic factors.

Commissioner Linda Bruno said the league plans to change the pairings for next season.

ā€œWe are going to change it. We committed to it for two years and now weā€™re going to look at it again,ā€ Bruno said. ā€œWe want to start to look at matching our top teams with our top teams. That will be who plays twice. Itā€™s not going to be an exact science ā€¦ TV will play into it too, because thereā€™s some games they will want.ā€
I found this in another thread. http://www.ninernation.net/forum/showthread.php?t=15533

It looks like we could still get a home and home with GW at least since we are sort of one of the best teams and I am sure geogrpahy will still play some role. I hope we will will home and home with them anyway since I am moving to DC upon graduation.

Davidsonā€™s heyday in college hoops was during Lefty Driesellā€™s tenure as coach there, which was during the 1960s. The Cats made it to the Elite 8 in 1969, losing to Chapel Hole 87-85. After that season, Lefty was hired by Maryland. Since the ACC was formed in the early 50s, Iā€™m going to have to have more ā€œproofā€ that Davidson was ever even considered for membership.

I was thinking the same thing!

Whatā€™s Lefty doing now? I remember he went to coach at Georgia State (and subsequently beat us his first year there when we played them). But, I donā€™t think heā€™s coaching there anymore.

Lutz was on WFNZ this morning (very good interview, btw) and said next yearā€™s schedule will be the most challenging Out of conference schedule since heā€™s been here. :wow:

Wonder if thatā€™s because the teams we will be playing will be better than the ones before or if our new team will present even more ā€œchallengesā€ than this year.

Lefty retired in 2003. Michael Perry has been coaching there since.

The OOC teams (if the contracts are signed) will most definitely be the toughest from top to bottom heā€™s ever had to prepare for. No one can complain about the quality of the schedule, or the fact that the schedule will have a stong local flavor.

We never played Georgia State while Lefty was their coach.

BTW, when Lefty ā€œretiredā€ in mid-season during the 2002-03 year, he was ony 14 games shy of the 800-win mark (786-394).
What are you smoking?
Thanks Dax.

What am I smoking? Nothing. Charlotte has consistently performed in the top eschelon of the A-10, so I wanted to say we are one of the best teams, but that sounds arrogant when you are 6-8, so I said sort of. We are destined to be one of the top in the future, therefore being a logical fit for a 1 and 1 with GW, but saying we are one of the best teams felt weird at 6-8.

Maybe I should have said one of the best programs??? You get my point anyway.
