2008 scholarships?

If Coley is a done deal, are we finished for the year? Does this leave us three scholarships for next year? I think that could be our one of our most important years of recruiting ever to build on the talent we have in place now.

assuming we don’t exhaust or use our last scholarship i would say we are done after recruiting coley seeing how our number 2 juco, clemente, was picked up by WSU

If we have 1 we need to use it.

Unless we can get a rebounding JUCO I don’t see the need to use our last ship, but I think we will exhaust all options before deciding not to use it with Lutz’s contract situation.

Who knows what kind of players we are going to be able to bring in for 2008 with Lutz’s contract situation, but we will have 2 players graduating (Lee & Phaler) unless I am missing somebody.

If we have 1 we need to use it.

I say “nay.” I understand why people would want to grab up somebody, but why rush it and get a sub-par guy, or one that is left over. Leave it for next year and use that year to evaluate a talent so that it is better well spent. I understand people are going to say, “nobody will want to come with Lutz having only one year on his contract”, but he’s not going to get any better talent with so little time in the recruiting period, and with so little talent left. Best to have a better idea of what guy a coach is going to bring in.

i feel like we have a relatively full roster - unleses we bring in a new center?

for a Phil Jones type situation.

I agree. Unless we can get someone who will contribute immediately, just store it and wait for a Jones/Gerrity situation. Those always seem to pop up.

Why not?

Lefty’s list from this thread

With one scholarship to give (thank you Charlie Coley! ), the only recruits left this late in the game are Lance Pevehouse, Tirrell Baines (stopped recruiting - academics), Kenyan Harmon (decommit), Schyler King, Eric Whitehurst (decommit), and Michael Sanchez (probably going prep but may visit Kentucky). Unless the coaching staff has something up their sleeve that we don’t know about.

Found a new guy. Sean Carter, 6-9, 6-10 PF, C, Laurinburg prep. Would be a freshman.

Someone feel free to start a thread.

Does anyone else think we need more depth in the backcourt, if we have another injury like Dewhurst this year we could be thing at the gaurd spots....

Not really.

We’ll have Gerrity, Goldwire, Harris, and Lewis able to play PG
We’ll have Goldwire, Andersen, Barnett, and Lewis able to play SG

There’s also plenty of SFs that could probably shift to the 2 in an emergency.

Maybe I’m taking a more pessimistic approach to our backcourt but that list doesn’t look too hot.
Outside of Goldwire and Anderson we have no clue what we are going to get out of the rest of our gaurds, I don’t have much faith in Lewis and Gerrity won’t be able to play till January. I think it’s harder to get a JUCO gaurd but I think we need someone that can play right away and give Goldwire breaks untill we get Gerrity second semester.

What is our depth at center? Right now I have Jones (0 ppg last year) and Ngoundgo (0 ppg last year).

Remember Greg Oden last year? Even with a couple referees cutting him some breaks, Oden struggled to average between 25-30 minutes per game. That’s not something that necessarily happens to a PG or a SG. The best guards can play up to 35 minutes per game with ease without worrying about fouls.

If either Phil or Gaby are unavailable for a game - we could be in trouble. I still remember last year when Coleman (back), Courtney (on crutches), and EJ were all hurt at the same time.

We can use another player, we really have:

 • Goldwire as a starter nailed down, that is one player

Jones, you can probably also assume he is a starter since he was in the program last year. Besides Anderson, who played a lot last year, I would say we have 3 players on the roster as our top 8, so we need plenty more.

Basically we need 5 players at this point who can contribute to get us to a 8 player rotation. Seems to be a stretch.

my prediction for starting five next year
first semester
pg goldwire
sg andersen
sf coley
pf mack
c jones

top three off the bench
dewhurst, wilderness, gaby

second semester
pg gerrity
sg goldwire
sf coley
pf mack
c jones

i think we could go ten deep.

I’m interested to see how our guard rotation works. I bet when andersen comes out, we’ll move Lee to shooting guard and have Lewis or Harris come in and perform at the point. When Lee comes out, I suspect Lewis/Harris as well… as I don’t see Ian running the point. Barnett should get some playing time at shooting guard, too, but i’m not sure how he will fit into the rotation; I suspect he might get Booker minutes his first year, then get serious time next year, but I dunno.

i don’t think lee comes out much at all next year. barnett i think will redshirt.

1st semester
pg - lee
sg - ian
sf - dewhurst/coley
pf - mack
c - jones

2nd semester

pg - gerrity
sg - lee
sf - coley
pf - mack
c - jones

if im lutz, im hoping harris turns out to be good because he could start at the pg and that way lee wont have to play pg and andersen wont have to start.
