2017 Green White Scrimmage

This is tonight at 5:30. Last year was a good opportunity to see the team play ball. It is a running clock, and the intensity is not 100%, but this is no Midnight Madness nonsense–there will be basketball. It will be good to see the new players, especially the big guys. I am putting the over/under line for Haslem’s shot blocks at 4.5.

Working till 5:30 today. Can somebody take notes about what you see? Especially the big guys?

Under… But I’ll take Thomas’ chances at the over. Looking forward to see both of these guys play

Exactly what I was gonna say !
GO NINERS !

Haslem had 13 pts and 8 rebs, that’s encouraging.

Mostly it is hard to really tell much because it is very early in the season, and when you play against yourself there are a lot of guys on the floor that usually will not be. That said, our core players looked pretty good.

Austin Ajukwa picked up right where he left off, hitting from the outside, driving to the hoop. He is probably our most versatile player and creates matchup problems for most teams.

Andrien White lit it up from the outside and is back to 100% physically which is great news. His defense should be back to normal which is smothering. With Vanhook gone I suspect White’s attitude will be better that late in the season last year.

Jon Davis was Jon Davis.

Najee Garvin looked to score more tonight than last year. Mostly that was good. His squared up 10 foot shot had a little better form. His 15 foot fall away jumper did not. He looks a little stronger than last year and he should have a lot less pressure to own the middle. I am optimistic that he will start to fill his role.

Jaylan McGill played the PG opposite Davis. He looks ready to get his minutes. Good handle, and I was told he is one of our toughest defenders. He has already put on 10 lbs in the weight room, and at 6’2" 195 lbs he has good size.

Jailan Haslem is a load. It will be nice to have someone in the middle that will not get pushed around. He seemed to have pretty good hands, and although his FT stroke isn’t perfect I think he went 3 for 4. Offensively he is about putbacks.

Bryant Thomas is a freshman. He is skinny and looked a little lost. If he blocks shots and grabs rebounds he will be a net add. Let’s see if Price can build a player.

Luka Visic hit one nice shot, but missed quite a few. He looks good shooting, but they didn’t fall. Maybe it is just early. I did not get a good feel for him.

Milos Supica has mono and was not there.

Hudson Price was in class tonight working on a Masters degree. Coach Price took the opportunity to say that is because we take academics and going to class seriously. Bazinga!

Only one home game in December, which is weird, but five home games in November, which gives us an opportunity to get off to a strong start.

EDIT: Oh yeah, at dinner I sat with Kevin King (F '77), from the NIT Finals and Final Four teams, and Donnie Koonce (G '81). It is always good to see guys of that caliber in Halton, and they spent time talking to McGill at our table about the good old days (because that is what old guys do) and keeping up with his studies. McGill seems like a great young man.

mono? that is not good. that totally changed sager’s career some years back. i wonder how long he will be out for.

Thanks Nugget, excited to hear. How many were there?

Just found out yesterday it was mono, but with that, it’s possible he would have to redshirt. That’s a shame if it happens, coaches were really high on him.

The alumni side was pretty full, so a nice crowd for a scrimmage that was primarily marketed to season ticket holders that paid early.

I’m not sure on numbers, maybe 300 or so? Very nice crowd. Unfortunately I’m not as high on what I saw as Nugget. The team looked pretty bad. BUT is a scrimmage in October, so no big deal. I just hope we can compete better this year

Don’t think there should be the talk of Supica redshirting just yet. Sager had an extreme reaction to Mono (apparently).

I think normally back to 100% in 2 months or less. That was my experience.

Mono is tough man. I’ve seen it take guys out for months, and I’ve seen guys come back in less than a week. You never know. I wouldn’t be shocked either way.

We are Niners - if he is back in a few weeks I’ll be shocked. We don’t catch breaks like that. I bet the NCAA punishes us for him having Mono.

clt says the school is advertising that the event is tonite?
clt says the school is advertising that the event is tonite?
Scrimmage last night, Madness event is tonight.

Is anyone going to this tonight? If i recall, it was a pretty decent crowd last year.

My assessment after last night:
*Haslem is for real.
*Ajukwa & Garvin are more aggressive and confident and that’s a good thing !
*AW has turned defensive and still has his shot.
*JD is JD…nothing more to be said.
*Shooters off the bench in Vasic and Murphy
*Thomas has a long ways to go.
*The team seems to have bonded and come together and are alot smarter than previous squads.

Surprise of the night was the maturity and composure of McGill. Look alot like Leemire and looks to be a great defender and ball handler. Should see alot of minutes.
