Didn’t expect to add Mark Gottfried to this list at beginning of season, but the train wreck that Wolfpack hoops became in ACC play is astonishing. Both Mike Gminski and Dino Gaudio both mentioned today on ESPN 730 that the ouster of assistant Bobby Lutz as problematic for the Pack from a coaching standpoint.

Former 49er assistants Orlando Early, Butch Pierre, and Rob Moxley are all on the Wolfpack staff and presumably are out of work too.

If you fire your coach who are you going to get that is going to be any better? NC State lives in the shadow of two blue blood basketball programs. It is hard to snap your fingers and compete at that level overnight. Not too long along Mark Gottfried took teams to the sweet sixteen. We would build a statue for a coach if he could takes us to multiple sweet sixteens.
I kind of understand it, though.
They have two national titles and probably the greatest player in college basketball history (David Thompson). They have a big budget, a good conference, and a large fan base.
It’s not like Gottfried has been improving the team, though. His records have slowly declined. They had a down year last year and he got a pass. He probably would’ve gotten one this year if it weren’t for the way they are losing. Not only do they look terrible, but they’re losing by 51 to CHeat, 25ish regularly, etc. All of that with a top-5 pick (Smith Jr.) and another first rounder (Yurtseven) in the starting five (plus Dorn, etc.). They have talent and they’ve looked awful and haven’t played hard. Sometimes it doesn’t work out, but it’s easier to swallow if you’re competitive or the effort is there. None of those things were true for them. Why should they accept being bad? They gave the guy a shot, it looked like it would work, ultimately it didn’t. Look for someone else. Let’s not forget that Duke was pretty terrible for a long time while NCSU was one of the “blue bloods.” They weren’t willing to accept that.
I’m all for giving a guy time and allowing him a down year (they’re inevitable), but you have to have the b*lls to cut the cord when things aren’t working, and they REALLY haven’t been working in Raleigh for the last two years.
Hmm… reminds me of someone else we all know.
But yeah, I think the big thing that people miss with Gottfried’s team is the way they were losing, just not competing, fighting amongst each other, hemorrhaging talent every off season… that’s not how you want to run a program. If they were competitive in their losses, had good team chemistry, and didn’t lose everyone during the off season, hell if they had just one of those, he probably would have stayed. All of that is indicative of a toxic atmosphere and a downward trending program.
Regarding the Niners, I want Price to succeed, but I have no problem only giving him 3 years if next year is the same as this one (assuming we don’t go on a miracle late run and win out/go far in the conf tournament).
Slightly off point, WCU will probably have an opening at the end of the season. Bobby Lutz is young enough to coach there 10-12 years. He can win in the SoCon.
Among those receiving pink slips are Kim Anderson at Mizzou and Derek Kellogg at UMass, both alums of their respective institutions.
Hope this kind of apathy doesn’t happen to the Niners, but…

Lorenzo Romar out at Washington, where he was the program’s 2nd winningest coach (298-196 in 15 seasons). Some of us old timers will remember him as the HC at Saint Louis (1999-2002) prior to taking over at his alma mater.
Cal job opens up as Cuonzo Martin agrees to 7-year, $21 million contract to take over at Mizzou. Something of a homecoming for Martin as he coached at Missouri State for 3 seasons prior to a 3 year stint at Tennessee.

Missouri is an underachieving school in football and basketball. Two other underachieving schools are Illinois and Cal. Coach Martin is young enough to move to Illinois in 6-7 years if he does well at Missouri.
