2023-24 49er MBB Game #2 - Liberty vs Charlotte (@Spectrum Center) 11/10 4:30 PM ESPN+

That’s todays college mosey sports.
In todays game Demarco Jarvis Eddie our all time greats likely never finish here.

Our football team is mostly mercenaries. Thats todays environment.

I’m not blaming the coaches. Tough situation when a piece of shit bails on you after his top players leave but it’s gonna be a long year.

If I ever run into Sanchez, which I probably won’t, I promise you I’ll tell him to his face he’s a classless piece of shit. Hope y’all would do the same….

I thank him for leaving and we don’t have to pay him. Blessings.

My recollection is that the vast majority of those transfers who didn’t find a new team were walk-on / non-scholarahip players. Then add in the NCAA now denying virtually all waivers for 2+ time transfers, then the available pool is even smaller.

There’s not a single fan of this program that wouldn’t trade an eight win team this year for an NCAA team in the new coaches third year. The one year team composition argument is a red herring and incredibly silly. An AD dictating what players or assistant coaches a potential candidate should have is idiotic. Let a winner come in and build his program. Taking a year or two of lumps on the way to resurgence is almost guaranteed regardless, so why put in pointless conditions.

If the new coach had a roster of low quality transfers for a season before building his team, it would have been fine. We are an excuse making machine.

The point is this year was likely going to suck no matter what.

The question is is the best time to hire your new permanent coach, committing a 5 year contract from a very small and limited candidate pool and burning roster spots with bottom of the barrel guys in June? Or waiting thru the traditional cycle window with a full candidate pool and giving that coach a chance to build the roster he wants with more long term guys.

One way has far more risks than the other. I just don’t understand why y’all think hiring a perm guy in June was a good idea. To me that would have been peak mismanagement and an excuse for hiring a substandard coach. Mike could point to the small pool and say well we didn’t have much to choose from. I know the entire situation is in Mikes mismanaged approach to basketball but this was the right approach.

We are ripping Ron for leaving because it is an asshole move in June and then want a guy that would have done the same thing to his current program? No thanks.

I’d rather wait a year try to get it right and not give Mike any excuses if he gets it wrong. I don’t have much faith in him getting it right in the first place.

Either way we burn a year - just one way has a Bette chance of getting the right guy. It’s like y’all want to give Mike an easy excuse to get it wrong.

Your commitment to explain things over an over again to boneheaded people on this board is impressive!

Hahah I’m just trying to figure out why they want the path of higher probability of getting it wrong and giving Mike an excuse if he does get it wrong.

Your entire premise is based on the false assumption that no good candidates were available. There were several up and coming coaches who did not get new jobs who would probably love to quintuple their income. It sounds like the arbitrary conditions placed by our AD had a direct impact on the pool of candidates, not that there were simply none available. As long as you continue to base your perspective on this false assumption, your perspective will never change. I get it you trust Hill completely, I think it’s evident that we made some critical mistakes. Yours is based on false assumption, mine is based on data regarding available suitable candidates. We clearly aren’t going to agree.

Faith in Hill? I just said my lack of faith in him is why I didn’t want to hire in June and no matter who was available in June the pool will be much bigger this spring and the long term prospects of building the team gets far easier.

You are advocating for the harder of the two paths and the least likely to be successful only because I’m convinced you hate Mike so much that you are going to advocate for whatever he doesn’t do just so you can stay angry.

If he makes this hire wrong then it’s going to be a big sign it’s time for him to move on. I don’t want him to have any excuse.

Hill absolutely made the right call.

You do not want to hire a head coach out of the normal cycle unless someone perfect just falls in your lap.

Hopefully he’s working the phones, working the agents looking for a great hire next year.

We need a guy who has been a successful coach at lower level conference (my preference) or an experienced head coach who has climbed the ladder of success, got canned and fell down the ladder and is ready to do it again.

No more damn assistants. No more gimmick hires. Period.

Who are the ā€œavailable suitable candidatesā€? Not a snarky question, but I remember looking at the list in June and it wasn’t very impressive.

NWA hits the nail on the head on why do you want to hire someone who will do the same thing to his current team that Ron did to us. IMO Ron is stuck at UVA for awhile because of how he left this team, administration, fans and players families. It was a dick move. The pool of candidates is limited just for this fact. Young, up and coming coaches do not want to hurt their career path by doing a move like this in June to end up at Charlotte with a bad reputation and burnt bridges.

Any coaches around in June will still be around in March as well as others. Someone said that 800 players were left in the portal. Once again, would we want to pick over the scraps and put them on scholarships over keeping the coach and team we have? I think it was the right move to give Fearne a show me year. I like what Fearne is saying in the press. He is about winning and losing and teaching the kids to win. We’ll see if he does enough and has a good enough plan to earn a contract extension.

I really wasn’t excited about the guys Mike was supposed to try and hire. If he made a sincere offer with those player and personnel restrictions, then that was still a dud move. If he has a coach or maybe more than one who said try me next offseason, then it’s potentially a different scenario worth implementing.

I came here to read about the Liberty game but it seems I have stumbled into a retread argument from the summer.

Is this what we are going to do after every loss??

You must be new here (I know you aren’t), but yes this is what a handful do. Every coach should be fired, AD should be fired and hire Lutz to coach all sports and be AD.
