2023-24 49er MBB Game #3 - Utah Valley vs Charlotte 11/15 7:00 PM ESPN+

That was not an entertaining game to watch. An ugly win beats an ugly loss but it was underwhelming.

Starting 5 all played over 30 + minutes. Not sure what Fearnes angle on that is this time of year. Tough to do that this weekend in a tourney setting.

Fearne post game always sounds like Matt just put his dog down.

Fearne stated got some teams coming to Halton that ā€œhave have some Dudesā€. Lol. Gotta love that.

If the game had quarters, the 1st & 4th were very strong while the 2nd/3rd we look disorganized and at times tired. I missed the Liberty game but have seen both home games and overall I like what I see but also see room for improvement as we face better teams. The balanced scoring was really nice (we had 3 guys in double digits at the 10:00 minute mark in the 2nd half) but it’s also clear we don’t have a clear #1 that we can go to when we need points.

Jackson is good and it’s been nice to see a big guy that can post up, pass relatively well and hit a 12’ jumper too. He does get winded and when he subs out, the office tended to get stagnant.

Igor looks really good with a 2nd double-double. Patterson did not score as much tonight but he seems to be all over the court with rebounds and steals but he needs to hit is FTs.

Sounds like Graves was sick but I thought he played well in the second half and hit a big three when we needed it.

The fact that they made a run at us and we held tight and never gave up the lead is good but the way we closed out to win by double digits was VERY nice to see, especially from a team that is clearly still gelling. Will be interesting to see what the rotation looks like this weekend on a quick two-game trip so guys are fresh.

First game I watched.

Defense was great. Offense was good to start and end the game. The middle 20 to 25 minutes, the offense was very stagnant with a lot of missed open shots.

Folkes is my favorite player, but does not look like he fits into the new offense. He needs to be able to get downhill and create, but with Jackson in the post, the spacing is not there. He seems to fit what Fearne wants with playing fast, but the offense is set up to post up the big man.

We need Folkes ability to break down his man a drive to free up post play.
Aslo we have Rolf and Richert in witness protection
with Young for some reason.
You could start a pretty good team with those
three.

What are you basing that last statement on?

Hard game to watch

I didn’t get to watch much of the game, but what I saw made me angry and then relieved. I think this team is still figuring out how to play with each other. I watched a 10 pt lead get erased due to turnovers. Really bad, stupid turnovers. Then I watched them change to a much more engaged team and blow out the team in the last few minutes. I think Fearne is doing some good things, especially defensively. We are going to take some bumps and bruises to begin this season, but I think about mid season/conference play we will start playing more like a team instead of 5 guys on a court in the same jersey. You can see improvements from game to game, but everything hasn’t clicked yet. Hopefully soon or that Duke game is going to be unwatchable.

Overall it was a 17 point win against an inferior team.
Takeaways:

Run they made was from a few bad turnovers combined with some open missed shots.

Good to see Braswell back out there. We need him to hit jumpers. If we don’t, our bigs will struggle as teams will pack it in on them.

Igor is coming into his own. Playing well. He had a couple of unforced turnovers

We have to get some more help off the bench. Can’t play guys 30+ minutes over the whole year.

I agree with all of this. I would really like to see RB get MORE minutes, as well as Niagu. Also, I really would like to see Rolf and Young get a few minutes early in the season so we might have a better idea if they could contribute later.

I expected Reichart to redshirt this year, so I’m not all that surprised by him not playing.

Last year I remember people saying rolf looked good in practice so I was expecting him to be at least a small contributor this year, but he can’t even get 1 minute of play time so far.

I assume they are working Braswell back in slowly. Been a long time since he played meaningful minutes

I really wish you had said "play as a team’ instead of ā€œplay with each otherā€

As has been stated on this board and by coaches, JT adds more than what you see in the box score.
They said on post game last night that he could literally coach the team. I know I’ve seen him tell teammates where their spot is in certain offensive sets. Now, if his jump shot was more consistent…

Yeah, in hindsight I guess I should’ve proof read that before posting it.
