Probably not the best thread for this, but has anyone else seen the new High Point U arena? This might be old news, but last night was the first time I have seen it on tv. It is not too big, but it looks REALLY nice to me.

I am a bit biased, having met and talked with Nido Qubein in person a couple of times, and coming away with mixed opinions… Anyway, I saw this thing when it opened. It looks and feels more like a ballroom or business center to me. Or even more accurately, one of those giant megachurches.

It’s nice but it didn’t give me that hoops arena vibe. I’d rather have something more traditional.

It fits High Points vibe, love Halton. Would love to see the hospitality rooms turned into suites/club level with the renovation whenever it happens. You could take out the top ten rows and turn them into elevated loge boxes or something of that nature. Would give the arena life in the upper edge even without a large crowd.

High Point’s arena is similar to College of Charleston’s. HPU’s has more suites and boxes.

High Point played in a very small gym until this new arena opened about 4 years ago. For a school that has moved up to D1, High Point does not have a history of success in basketball. They were good in the late 1960s when Gene Littles was there.

Regardless, it shows really well on TV. The boxes/suites look legit and the ribbon boards make it look big time. They even appeared to use the white areas/wall above the suites as a ā€œribbon boardā€. I’m not up to speed on how that is done, but I think I have seen other arenas do that as well (ie; Texas). Just projected ?

Halton needs some upgrades to make it seem more premium. It has aged out of its initial mid 90s build (it was beautiful then).

Damn we should almost be done paying off the bond debt on it already. Wow am I old…

Anyway, I do like what they have done with the main scoreboard and the 2 giant corner screens. Those all look really good. And I always liked the general aesthetics of the arena, with the exception of the track.

The evergreen plans for Halton look pretty interesting and would make it a more modern arena.

30th anniversary will be in 2 years? 3 years? That’d be pretty cool time to announce some renovations.

Yeah, the Evergreen plans do look good…hopefully, I’ll see them in my lifetime.

Love the Evergreen vision for Halton, if Basketball becomes the Niners sport again I could see it happening faster than we think.

Ticket office/Video Board on the West Deck side makes a ton of sense since most of the crowd comes from that entrance.

New Upper level with Club/Closer upper level seating.

Suites and Loge boxes on the salon side.

Overall I like the initial conceptual designs of a redesigned halton, but I feel like the loge boxes would be better suited on the bottom rows of the upper level rather than the top.

Are they at the top so they can have direct access to the salons and amenities there?

I’m sure that’s why they’re up top, it would not be super complicated to build them and you can attach them to suites with TVs/kitchens/ect.

We definitley need more premium options for the big corporations in Charlotte.

clt says it is sad that we have to build the ticket office at the correct location almost 30 years later because the contractor built haltron 90 degrees from the intended design

Is this actually true? I keep hearing it and it makes sense but I can’t find any physical evidence for it.

clt says it was all covered up

Watched some of the Maryland at Michigan State game today. JY finished with 31 pts and got quite a bit of props from the FOX Sports announcers, who also questioned his absence from the 2024 Bob Cousy Award top 10 list. Got a CLT mention in too! Gave the Terps their first lead of the game at 42-41 in the second half, but Spartans answered with a 22-12 run to win 63-54. Not much offensive help from his teammates today other than Donta Scott’s 13 pts as only three Terps scored in the first half. Big Ten hoops not a thing beauty!

Latest bracketology from Jerry Palm has a #7 BYU vs a #10 Nebraska in opening round.

FAU the lone AAC team.
