2023 49er Football Week #9 - Charlotte vs FAU 10/27 7:30 PM ESPN2

I think we would still be disappointed had Biff not talked up the team so much. However, this is year 4 level disappointment. Biff brought this kind of fan reaction on himself. Next time just keep quiet and win. The players are an example of Biff as they don’t know when to be quiet either.

Coach likes to use the analogy of ā€œthe island of misfit boysā€ to portray our team. Sadly he appears to be right, and not in a good way. It just saddens me when I’m not fuming my guts out.

Well I enjoyed the tailgate but that was it. The stupid penalties continued. Our defense wasn’t very good. I realized just how bad ECU is after this game. Memphis game is going to be ugly.

We will see what happens but I don’t think Biff throws in the towel after the season, I think his ego is too big to do that. We have to hope he can bring in better talent on offense and cleans up the self inflicted issues.

clt asks what was your highlight of the fau game?

If fau can afford him, so can we. We arent rich but we arent poor. Hill just tries to get cute with the hires instead of smart. We had the current unlv coach a day before biff was hired…unlv is 6-1. 1 loss is to Michigan

Some said we weren’t supposed to beat FAU? Spread was down to +3.5 around game time. They have a first year HC and are now 3-1 in conference. With losing their starting QB. Herman was a competent hire with plenty of experience. That’s an AD that knows what he’s doing. Not a HS head coach that wasn’t even on their website. Hill gonna Hill…

Mike hill has us right where he wants us. We have a shit program and when people ask why don’t we have nice things he can say it’s because we won’t pay for them and blame the fans. In fact several of our most visible fans regularly blame the fanbase for not supporting the program enough.

This is a shit product. Basketball is a shit product. That’s all 99% of the population cares about. Our leaders continue to fail us miserably and want you to shoulder the blame.

I think Gaber gets what sports should be for the University. It’s an opportunity to elevate the the profile of the institution. Right now our two money sports have been mostly a detractor. That football game last night was more of a blight.

I cannot imagine she is happy with how things are going. This game was just awful from a PR perspective. Friday night national TV and we didn’t just play bad football, we didn’t look like we belonged by any measure including character.

Where did the alternative dance squad / cheerleaders come from? Are they students at UNC Charlotte or a local group? They sure looked serious about dance marching out on the field. PA guy did little explanation.

Then maybe she should make a change. We are an embarrassment.

COACHING WOES - Charlotte was bailed out by a missed 48-yard field goal at ECU, allowing multiple crucial coaching flubs to slide under the rug with a victory over an in-state rival shining through. But the indecisiveness at quarterback and troublesome middle eight of Friday night’s game proved fatal.

Hunter is 100% right about this. Ignore the W and L outcome over the last 2 weeks and look at the underlying issue.

I think most everyone here sees that we are not a well coached team, regardless of the outcomes.

We all wanted to love Poggi. Almost all of us got carried away by his charm and bravado.

What we are stuck with is a 63 year old that has never led a college program and a very young staff also mostly in the highest role they have ever been placed in, and the results aren’t surprising given the consistent levels of inexperience.

Not a good position for a program with an already strung out fanbase to again be asked to endure.

Next time, hire someone who has already had some success as head coach of at least a good, well regarded FCS program. Then ask him who he intends to hire at coordinator and make sure they fit that mold too. No more gimmicks.

And a question I am asking myself as a fan - how many bad hires can you make in revenue sports before you luck out and accidentally make a good decision? Our run of awful coaching hires under 2 ADs is staggering.

I’m not saying we should have hired Pete Rossomando but the team didn’t look like a disaster zone when he coached at the end of the 2022 season. He had college head coaching experience and is currently 4-3 at Lamar. It would have been nice if Biff brought in a seasoned head coach to advise him. High school football is not comparable to scholarship college football.

If it’s true we had this guy lined up as a potential hire and didn’t pull the trigger, we made a mistake. He had some solid seasons in the SEC and proved he could recruit at a school that isn’t an SEC powerhouse.

Something positive from last night.

Biff looks like he is in way over his head. Every time the camera shows him, he never looks pissed off, or fired up, or engaged with the team. He just looks baffled and has this ā€œoh crap what did I get myself intoā€ look on his face. There is never any energy from him. Healy was not a good coach, and he was in over his head too, but damn at least he looked like he cared about what was going on on the field.

We hired a high school coach and he coaches like a high school coach. Shocker for the ages. :expressionless:

I’ve posted every now and then on these forums as an ECU alum, and yes I’m willing to take flak for last weeks win you guys got over us. I think you have to give Biff one more year to figure it out. Sometimes you have no idea how your team will look from year to year but with the pipeline he has with st. Francis I think you try and ride that out another year or two.

Offensively we both have the exact same issues. We both have a quarterback that can run but can’t pass and a quarterback that can’t run and is ā€œalmostā€ a game manager but not quite. He has for the most part done an incredible job of turning around your defense. It’s the same reason I’m not ready to cut Houston loose like some of our fans are because the defense is great, we just happen to have the worst offense in the country, and quite possibly the worst offensive unit we’ve ever fielded since we’ve been a D1 program.

The last thing you want at our level is constant turnover. If Biff leaves after this year what are the odds those players who turned around the defense stick around? You guys are one year removed from getting beat by Gardner Webb by three scores. If he can find a quarterback that is actually serviceable (ditto on our front) it can vastly change what next year may look like in a very positive way.
