2024-25 49er MBB post-season poll: Fire Fearne?

If the money to buy out Fearneā€™s contract was availableā€¦

What to do with Fearne?
  • Fire him
  • Give him 1 more year to turn things around

NET #271

For those that vote to give Fearne 1 more year to turn things around, what kind of results would he have to have for you not to fire him after next year? We are dead last in the AAC. It shouldnā€™t take much to have a big improvement but still not have a great year. For example, if next year we are 7th in AAC, are you giving Fearne another year?

I dont want to waste a bunch of money paying off a coach right now.

We have done that too much.

Play out the string and if he has to go wait till his last year.

We have to avoid wasting money.

Not sure about ā€œWhat ifā€¦ā€ but we canā€™t keep on hiring/firing coaches! This is not to say that we keep Ferne. But weā€™re projecting a sense of extreme instability with our ā€œNow-youā€™re-hereā€“now-youā€™re-NOTā€ hiring record. We gosh-awful need good coaches, but we also need a semblance of a stable environment. Albin, I think, is a good start. We just canā€™t keep hiring short-term coaches! Here is where I go off on the AD. Itā€™s not the Board of Governors or anybody else in Chapel Hill that is forcing this. WE have to address it! And it might have to start in the Chancellorā€™s Office. Not that she can/should fix it. But she can sure tighten some screws!

Would it be an upgrade to buy out Fearne, hire Kevin Keats (NC State), and pay him what we are paying Fearne allowing NC State to subsidize his salary.

Personally, I like Fearne but this is intriguing.

If money wasnā€™t an issue was part of the poll. So whatā€™s his next year results have to be for you not to fire him?

And no to Keats. I want an up and comer with upward trajectory. Like I said in the other thread, I wanna be a stepping stone dammit!

How is this not ā€œjust another ā€˜fixā€™ā€? Itā€™s a situational ā€œproblem-solverā€, but we need a solution, not a fix. Weā€™ve gone the ā€œhold my beer and watch this shit!ā€ route long enough and it doesnā€™t work. I think/hope Albin is a serious hire, unlike Healy, Biff, and (yikes!) maybe others.

I know we donā€™t want turnover, but look at rosters. Coach stability means zilch. All about :dollar_banknote: :dollar_banknote:

Coach basically lost every scorer from the previous season. Give him another year to get a group of men who are leaders and maybe even over achievers. I think he can do it but we shall see.

Then what does it matter who(m) we hire?

We need money for NIL not for another contract buyout.

You apparently havenā€™t followed Keatts outside the 9 game miracle run to the FF last season.

I missed that part.

I still say give him another year.

I like the way his players kept fighting this year. It sure seems like he kept the locker room together.

Letā€™s see what he can do next year.

I will put one asterisk by it. And itā€™s not really about Fearne.

If he turns it around next year and is in the top four of the conference (I would consider that a big turnaround) but all the good players leave after next year then I donā€™t know what the hell we are gonna do.

Only you can prevent forest fires

Iā€™d rather move one, but I realize there may be monetary constraints. It is what it is and we suck. Last year was fun but now we are back to the usual. Yes, I know having our three best players leave hurt, but we have to adapt and adapt quickly, imo.

That is the new world of college basketball at every level.
Juco loses best players to Div 1. Small Div 1 conferences best players move up to mid major and power conferences. Mid major conference best players move up to power conferences and power conferences having a bidding war for the best players currently in power conferences.
If we have any players that are successful they will get paid highly elsewhere (Igor).
I fully expect to lose Nik after the tournament and possibly Blackmon ( who has played well lately after getting healthy).

I think we have to give him another year, because we canā€™t be the program that fires coaches every two years in the two big sports. Hell itā€™s technically just his first year under contract. We canā€™t afford to fire coaches earlyit but we do anyway, and then it gets used to say ā€œwe are so poorā€ despite having a top 75 budget for one. Itā€™s also a terrible look secondly, who wants to come to a place like tha We are so incredibly lucky that Albin wanted to live in this area after having spent some time here. He easily could have waited for a much bigger bag or been scared off by firing a football coach a year and a half in.t?

We just refuse to do normal things like a normal program. At the end of February last year a national search should have been commenced to replace the head of Charlotte basketball. We would have had a list or 4 or 5 names of people who are up and coming and actually wanted to be here and were within our affordability range. There would have been current coaches who were winning their conferences or conference tournaments on that list. Then at the end of the season they should have interviewed, alongside Fearne, who at that point would have had his horrible late season skid and early tournament flameout AGAIN, and we should have picked the best candidate. That almost certainly would have been a current head coach at another program that had been turned around and was winning games.

We donā€™t do common sense things like that at Charlotte though.

clt predicts Igor goes to the next highest bidder next season

Igor is probably headed ā€œback homeā€ to continue his basketball career though G League may be an option too.

I donā€™t blame Igor. I woulda took 600k too. Hell I still will
