2024 49er Football - Head Coach search

With the unlimited transfer rules, I have come to a place where I am treating every player as a 1 year rental. We are going to have to replace over half of our roster every year no matter who is coaching. I definitely don’t want to hire a coach because I think ā€˜temporary player X’ tweeted something nice about Coach X. Every player is temporary and every player is replaceable.

I wouldn’t be mad if Bell was the hire. Current coach that seems like upward trajectory in career so far. Plus he was a ex qb so that always helps (don’t dwell on the past!). If you just look at his conference records, we would take that in a heart beat. He did well amongst his peers. That should be the expectation of our program and then hope for some scalps in OOC.

I notice that Hunter Bailey hasn’t tweeted one thing about the search since he got called to the principal’s office earlier this week.

Looking at Albin on paper.

That looks to me like a great hire.

If Hill could land him I take back any mean thing I’ve said or thought.

I would rather have him than the assistant from NC state. Not even close in my mind.

He is just what we need. A vastly experienced coach with a good track record for several years as a head coach. A steady hand to come in and settle this program down and get it on track.

I’ll be disappointed if our next coach wasn’t a HC last year with a winning record (.500 at bigger school I guess if let go)

And I’ll add this.

If they were to get Albin.

They need to give him plenty of time.

No early firing if he doesn’t make a bowl in year two.

They have to settle this program down and show some continuity and normalcy.

I wonder if the Ohio QB Navarro would follow if we lost Purdie or even if he stays. Passing stats are not overly impressive but he seems like a great runner!

Anybody that doesn’t act like biff will have plenty of time

I think you lose most with this route. Players are more connected to their position coach. Maybe some of the tight ends would stay.

The thinking behind player retention with Brewster, in my opinion, is assuming he keeps Mike Miller which is what coerces Purdie to stay. Purdie then rallies the troops, offensively, and gets a lot of the guys to stay put.

You lose the defensive guys regardless.

28 players in the portal. Our entire OL, and pretty much our entire defense, as well as 2 kickers and the freaking LS.

That will turn up the pressure on Hill a good bit.

Not saying that’s a good thing. The milk is spilt. We need to make the right decision for the future, not a knee jerk one.

Stats pretty similar to Purdie except for a better completion percentage - 65% to 50%.

Overall I’d like Bell, but the perception of ā€œsettlingā€ is hard for me. If he was truly the guy, his season is over and no reason to not hire him now.

IF Mike would come out and say ā€œwe wanted to interview all candidates on our list and some where not available until after Conference Championship gamesā€ and then Bell beat them out, great. But that would also feel like saving face some. If this were the case, he should say it now.

I’d prefer Albin though.

Really surprised we haven’t done anything with Candle at Toledo given Gaeber’s connection there. He’s at 1.1m or so annually. Albin and Bell are ā€œcheaperā€ as getting them to 1.1 or 1.2 would be an increase for them rather than giving Candle an increase to come here.

Nothing has changed. Nobody is panicking. Goosfraba.

Touch grass.

Right next to player #49. Clearly an Easter Egg.

clt provides some comments from the mountains:

I’m with you Bob. Plus….i don’t like….never have….UNCC. The alumni and athletics dept have an over inflated view of their college football worth. Of all sports they should excel at is basketball. They don’t tho. It’s an urban campus….in a hot bed of high school hoops… but they don’t. Seems like a coaching carousel. I enjoy my sense of schadenfreude.

Then pay the man. For God sakes Western, for once do the right thing when it comes to retaining qualified coaches. We have extended tons of coaches that were unproven and unqualified only to fire them in a year or two. Then we had to pay 2 coaches. Please Western, prove to us that you can make the right decision for once.

That would be unprecedented for fcs. Jimmy Rogers makes 330k… Maybe he gets big incentives …that number came from a Google search. With that said I think we should offer as much as we are able. I hope he stays he is appreciated here. I’ve never liked UNC concrete… And I’m an alum! Western was first though lol.

If what many said is true, that Bell seemed ā€œchoked upā€ or misty during his show, I guarantee it had nothing to do with the Campbell game, the playoff snub, etc.

If you read the Charlotte Papers, they make it sound like a done deal that Bell is heading to UNCC. Maybe that is why Bell cried on the show. I looked at the list of candidates & Bell is going up against some really good Big Time Coaches.

Based on Coach Jacobs’ performance in 9 years as a College Head Coach, any & EVERY school (whether they have fired / lost their Head Coach yet or not) should want to, and try, to hire him.

He don’t just talk about it. He IS about it.

BUT … that dude, whose X post is embedded, has no ā€œinside info.ā€

Keyboard warrior, hiding in his basement, blowhard, disgruntled wannabe-UNC-CLT non-fan (y’all know the type) with racist undertones in his many, all-caustic, X posts.

I believe you are right. Probably Kerwin, because I would think because he would have taken his name out of consideration if it was not him. I bet it was pretty much a done deal on Monday night during the coaches show. Sad that we are behind UNCC in the pecking order because of poor past leadership.

I didn’t have any insider info on UNCC’s side or WCU’s side. My opinion is strictly from an outsider looking in. With all the rumors, sightings and what seems to be our recruiting on hold… To me it’s obvious (in my opinion) that he doesn’t want to be in Cullowhee. He didn’t sign the extension. It might strictly be money, I don’t know. That’s ok I would take more money for another job too. I think we just need to prepare for Kerwin not being here for 2026 even if he doesn’t land this job. It kinda puts a damper on next year for me. I don’t think UNCC is a good fit either… Maybe it’s my purple colored glasses. I thought he could have been our Jerry Moore.

They will show him the door if he doesn’t win quick. Looking at their message board they don’t even want him… They are going crazy over Petrino… or the Ohio guy.

Don’t get me wrong I appreciate all he’s done for the program.

In my line of work, I come across many who work in collegiate athletics at all three divisions and also non-NCAA schools. I had a conversation today with a very trustworthy ā€œreliable sourceā€ who spoke on condition of anonymity. My source told me that Tuesday would be the day an announcement would be made and to look at Bobby Petrino to be named the next 49er head coach.

You heard it here first.

Wow. I never realized WCU fans were so delusional and douchey. If they think they should be anywhere near us in the pecking order, they are crazy.
