2024 49er Football Week 6 - Game #6 vs ECU 10/5 3:30PM ESPNU

I want the other in state schools to fail miserably

That’s a very sane and adult way to approach it. In many things I’d agree with you. But in college sports, logic and sanity are not the standard. Talk shit - it’s how rivalries are born. We have to make them hate us. Our fans our school our program. Just do it without being a total asshole.

Speaking of an elevated view of ā€œself worthā€, there is plenty on this board to go around.

Simply put, if ECU and Charlotte are good, the annual football game is a big deal statewide and in the conference.
If one of both of us suck, nobody cares except the hard core fans.
I hope our ADs are working together to keep a close relationship.

If we have a big Rivalry game each year, it can’t be ignored.
If we were not in the same conference as them it would not matter as much.

I know it is not a popular opinion here, but I think both schools need each other to steal attention from the ā€˜other’ state programs and to be Allies with future conf realignment.

Carry on with the trash talk. Its all fun, but sometimes on this board we dig a little deeper.

Those 2 things arent equivalent. We can surpass ecu quick.

I am confused by all the Rivalry talk. I would love for them to be a rival for all the reasons mentioned, same conf, distance, recruiting etc… but ECU has to step. I have always thought and been told, a rivalry is when it’s competitive and both teams have won. We have not lost to them. We beat them last year at their house and this year they came here, we smacked that ass, stole their girl and stuck them paying the bill. ECU has to do their part and win a football game against us.

We have already surpassed the Pirates.

I don’t like seeing anyone fail. However, it fires not bother me too see Houston struggle. Having him back outbon a verbal agreement at the last moment really hurt us.

Is it possible Houston could have built a much better program with the unique advantages we have in Charlotte?

He took the quick, short-term, money grab. Good fit him but his career may have been better had he came here.

Glad we have Poggi! He is what we need to build a strong foundation. Houston may have been a short-term success, with little left behind upon his departure.

I totally agree

This is true. But an auburn fan doesn’t want Bama to be good because it makes the iron bowl mean more. The hate transcends logic. Your logic is stellar, but college sports isn’t logical.

Davidson losing in basketball, app losing, ECU losing - give me all of that. On top of us running them all into irrelevance!

I very rarely visit another teams message board, but I did read some of the ECU Boneyard Banter tonight. Quite entertaining. I have really never followed their football program. But reading the comments, I thought well, they must be pretty darn good usually. So I added the wins and losses for the 10 years prior to this year. If I added correctly, they won 46 and lost 73 of the 119 games. That is a winning percentage of 38.65 percent. Did see quite a few better records in some earlier years, but not Alabama by any means. Just thought their bravado was interesting with that decade of below average results. Maybe it’s like our downward shift in basketball from our heyday.

As an older Niner I can say that is a pretty interesting comparison. They had some very good teams in the 90s like us in basketball. Their football teams have not been good under HCs Montgomery and now Houston. The firing of alum Ruffin McNeil was similar to our firing of Lutz. There was not agreement and haven’t been very good since. Steve Logan and Jeff Mullins is also an interesting comparison. Outsiders that turned the tide for the respective programs. I have always envied their football culture. Their fans are loyal and travel well despite lacking a ton of success, especially of late. Of course they had an 80 year jump on building that culture. Give us time and I think we can build our solid culture here. A game like Saturday will do tons for us.

I don’t disagree. We just need to be relevant when this happens. I don’t want to go down with everyone else.

With the current state of NIL and the recent disaster, I think that App’s glory days are over.
Also think that ECU has some tough times coming in Football.
Baseball still seams to be pretty stellar. Would love to be equal to their baseball program.

Since ECU football became a D-I program in 1965, the Pirates are 348-332-3. Their most successful coach during that period has been Pat Dye in 1974-79 with a record of 47-18-1. Forgot he spent 1980 at Wyoming before becoming HC at Auburn in 1981.

ECU coaches show on now MASN

Something I haven’t seen mentioned, but we apparent had a large number of recruits at the game. This being the case, what a fantastic time to have done so with the crowd and the great performance by the team!

The school posted a day before that they had run out of tickets for recruits.
