Him??? How about her? @GraceHGrill @CSLonQCN
has been faithfully covering Niner basketball and now baseball this season.
Niners looking much better today. Up 8-3 in the 6th.
I’m talking about the paper
Niners return the favor and carve up the turkeys 10-5. Tony Rossi was filthy.
He did look pretty good.
First action since 2022…
He looked great and I know was glad to finally get some action !
Did the basketball and baseball games today. There was a steady stream of Niners leaving Halton and headed to the Hayes. Both teams looked great. Both crowds were strong. You could tell our crowd was getting under the skin of the Hokie fans in attendance. Great day to be a Niner. Rossi did look very strong today and was bringing it.
ACC types are way better at dishing it than taking it.
clt says we are 69
My first game at the Hayes. Came in from Texas to catch the opener series! Great crowds all weekend! Super fun to see a packed house. That never happened at Georgia Tech! Glad the bats woke up Sat/Sun to be more competitive games. IMHO, the VT fans were better behaved than our section, that’s for sure. A few of our fans (in the parent section) behind the plate were way over the top and THAT NEVER HELPS the cause. There were border strike zone calls that didn’t fall our way and I would assume it was due to the belligerent fans being up the ump’s a$$. Agree this weekend crew was weak with inconsistent zones and calls. But that was completely unnecessary and definitely not a good look. The student section did deserve the “Keep it classy and be better” lecture on Sunday. Appreciate the support and them being there. The right/left is pretty funny (and demoralizing like the Ball 6, 7, etc, at TX A&M.) But keep it classy. Took it a little too far Sunday. Glad the weather cooperated and it was a fun trip!
Fingers crossed I get my new smoker before the UTSA series. Plan is to smoke some Brisket and Pulled pork for all 3 the games. Hoping to combine a tailgate with long time friends (player parents we’ve played with since 9u) at UTSA. I’ll keep y’all posted.
Overall the weekend wasn’t great, but we ended on a high note. We got punched in the mouth pretty hard but eventually got back up and punched back.
We had 9 guys get their first D1 ABs this weekend and 6 pitchers got their first D1 appearances. There was a mixed bag on the results but something to build on.
Playing a tough schedule is a double edged sword but I’m glad we schedule the way we do. It’s a much better measuring stick early in the season than loading up on cupcakes, padding the stats, and not learning anything about your faults. Losing sucks but I think skating through the non conference schedule with false hope is worse. Sink or swim.
Hey, last year they swept us in Blacksburg. We got one better this season.
I agree. We kinda did the same last year and it wound up making us a much better team at the end of the season.
I am of the opinion that it doesn’t matter. It’s sports, it’s whatever, everyone is just trying to have fun. Charlotte fans have always been historical maniacs, that’s the fun of it. That’s the culture.
The crowd was great. Really pleased with the turnout all three days. There’s a group of diehards down in the student section and they do a great job. There was one guy (not a regular) that started his consumption at Halton and continued down at The Hayes. Let’s just say that he had a little too much and was responsible for the F-bombs that we heard. Campus police went over and sent him home to drink some water (we can hope).
I realize that umpires are only human, but if they are going to alter the game based on what they hear from our crowd, they should probably avoid Greenville, NC, Hattiesburg, MS, and Ruston, LA to name a few. Definitely avoid Columbia, SC.
Anyway, great weekend. The tailgate on Saturday was cold but the heaters did the trick. Met a lot of new faces. It was awesome to see. All are welcome. Come join us this Saturday in lot 23.
I should have stopped by. Saw the tent and the spread, but as new player parent. Not aware of much or traditions. The students were indeed fun, (way more fun than GT games) until the Fbombs, but like you said, addressed. Section 104 was not “for fun”. Agree that Umping is indeed a thankless job for sure. Human or otherwise, but again, never helps, ever to be up an umps butt. Ever. (As a pitcher parent (others can attest to this as well), don’t appreciate anything that affects the consistency and accuracy of the zone.). Just first impressions new to The Hayes and the team.
We have a simple two-step process:
-
stop by
-
say hello
If you have smoked meat with you, you can skip step two.
Let me know if anyone is coming to the UTSA series in San Antonio. (Only an hour from my house or so).
“I’m extremely proud of what our guys showed, really from the second half of yesterday’s game into today,” head coach Robert Woodard said after the win. “It felt like it took us 13 innings to figure out how we were going to play and get our heartbeat at a certain pulse and balance ourselves. It took us a while and when you’re facing really good pitching to start the season - that’s not a good recipe. Once we got to about the fifth inning yesterday through today, it felt like that was going to be more of the norm of our brand of baseball. We still have a lot to clean up, but we anticipated having some growing pains coming into the season - it’s not going to be a finished product when our season starts. It’s certainly better to learn and get through those growing pains while winning, so today feels good, but we’ve got to continue to work on things and improve as we prepare for Tuesday.”
